I was just looking to get some thoughts on single shots. I always swear I'm gonna buy a repeater and for a while I owned a lever 30/30 and a pump slug gun and hated them. I just went out and bought a mossberg SSi in .308 and have had a NEF 12ga for years and love them. I had a NEF45/70 at one time and loved it but had to sell it. People have asked if has some thing to do with price and I tell them to go price my mossberg SSi against their marlin 30/30 and tell me if they think it's price or price a ruger No1. I just like my singles except for my .22 lever henry.

I have owned and shot/hunted with single shot, shotguns for as long as I can remember. Although one of my favorites guns when I was younger was a Savage/Stevens over and under .22lr and 410 shotgun, I guess technically it is not a single shot. I still have it but it is not used so much any more as I don't rabbit hunt like I used too.

I have owned and used many pump and semi auto shotguns, too. However I currently use a single shot winchester 3 inch 20 gauge most of the time when I go hunting. It is much lighter in weight and very easy to break down and put in a vehicle if i don't happen to have a case etc. and I really don't need or want anymore fire power. If I miss, I miss. Oh well.

At one time a buddy owned a Ruger #1 in .375 H&H and it was a lot of fun to shoot but I have never owned a highpower single shot myself. with the exception of muzzle loaders, which I use most of the time for deer hunting here in Iowa.

If you really want to get all warm and fuzzy for single shots you should read the current edition of the American Rifleman.
P.S. I love shooting my Sharps rifles and have a fondness for a Pedersoli made Trapdoor that is, according to some 'experts', supposed to be a big piece of shyt but things aren't turning out that way.

Well, I've been lusting after a Ruger #1 in 6mm Rem for quite a while now. Unfortunately they quit making them in that caliber several years ago. I really regret passing up on 2 that I found at a gun show a couple years ago. One was in near new condition for $450. The other was definatly carried hunting a number of times and was at $425. I know I could get one in .243 pretty easily, but dang it I want it in 6mm.

I don't know if I'm alone in thinking a collection of NEF handi's is money well spent, but then again, I couldn't care less. Rugged, accurate, tweakable, and great factory service.

NEF rifles are just plain a great value, and their youth models are best way I've found to introduce youngsters to firearms safety, ownership, maintenance, and responsibility.

Yeah, put me down as a fan.

My kids all have single shot .22s in my humble opinion that is the only way to learne how to shoot. one bullet at a time , one shot one kill.

Last season, I took my NEF single shot in .223 out varmit shooting with a buddy who uses an AR-15.

He could do follow-up shots a lot faster than I could.

But I never needed one that day.

Its kind of a cliche, but people with single shots tend to shoot them more carefully. I know I do. And I 'can' do a follow up shot pretty quick. I use a butt cuff to keep spares handy. I just don't miss as often.

So I think single-shots are under-appreciated.

For the past 20 years my dad has used nothing but a Ruger no1 in 25-06 for just about everything. He's a big fan of never taking a shot until you know you can make it. He also has one in 416rig that he bought for an African trip that never happened.

Granted, not a rifle but my son's deer gun is his Contender with a 14inch 30-30 barrel. I hope I've taught him as my father taught me.

My dad bought several NEF single shots for varminting... very accurate guns but often need a trigger job.

I have a buddy who hunted with a Ruger #1 in 7x57... he didn't miss much.

They are both very accurate rifles, though the Ruger has the stronger action. I don't think you can buy an NEF in .375 or .416.

Dr Rob, No sadly you can't Hndi's in .375 or .416rigby but they do make a .45/70govt and it will take down anything in N.America and I know alot of African guides carry Marlin 1895 guide guns in .45/70 although with the newer .450marlin that may have changed. But if some one is looking big bore NEF single then .45/70 is agood choice. Like I said I had one but had to sell it. :banghead:

Just bought a Thompson G2 rifle with various barrels. I really like this thing and find it to be accurate beyond belief. I have no problem with it being a single shot, but I do a lot of bird hunting and for that, I use a double barrel. I can't get by bird hunting with just one shot.

Ruger #1's aren't terribly cheap.

But boy, are they fun!

Here's my Ruger #1S in .45-70:

Ruger No. 1's are beautiful guns. I will have one someday. My problem is deciding what caliber to get. Until I decide, I think I am going to buy a T/C Encore in .204 Ruger and change barrels as I see fit. IMHO, single shots are great guns for beginners all the way up to the expert marksman. BTW, I have been under a rock for a while and I am ready to get down on THR! I hope I can help others as much as they help me! Good shooting.

Some beautiful guns here. I thought I was alone out here it's nice to see alot of you love your singles like I do. All my buddies I hunt with Got bolts, pumps, and auto's and man can they waste ammo on one deer (sad). A buddy of mine shot a deer 4 times last year and we tracked for 6 miles and 3 1/2 hours and never found it, I guess when you hunt with a single you just take a more calculated shot. No slam on any one here I'm sure alot of us can and do, still use one shot even out of an auto, just not the crew I hunt with.

I'm on a single-shot kick at present (first time in my life). Just a few NEFs and 1 Rossi so far, but when my ship comes in, I'll probably be a T/C hound.

I was telling my buddy the other day that if someone stole all of my guns, my first purchase to get 'back on my feet', hunting-wise, would be the Rossi 3-barrel set of .17HMR/.270 win/.50 ML. Killer deal for $279-ish.

Then add the .22/12 ga combo for another $130 and be fully back in bidness with 5 guns for just over $400:
