I saw a very nice Ruger #1 RSI in 30-06 today. Just like the one posted above from the Ruger website. What a beautiful gun!

At $500 used, it's a little out of my price range. Especially since I can't think of a really good application for it. I'm not a handloader, I have a good hunting rifle (and I'm actually doing more pistol and bow hunting these days), I usually practice highpower when I go to the range and I already have a single-shot Mossberg SSi-One in .308 I picked up for nothin'.

I just love the look and feel of this gun and the open sights, but I cannot think of where I would really ever shoot it.

So...What would be a good use for a Ruger #1?

If we only owned what we needed I wouldn't need multiple gun safes. What separates us from the peasants is that we own what we want as well as what we need. How drab would life be if we only owned what we needed? The rifle you mention is one of the most beautiful mass-produced guns on the market. It brings great pride of ownership and would be great fun to shoot at the range. Maybe you don't need it, but buying it simply because you want it will draw no criticism from me. Let he who is without sin...

I have a Ruger #1 International exactly like the one in your pic only mine is chambered for .270. Do I hunt with it? No. Why do I have it? Because I wanted it.:)

Being able to buy something you want vs something you need is, IMHO, good for the soul.

As long as the bills are paid, of course.

Seriously, sometimes you have to go for something you want and not worry about any justifications beyond that.

As long as the bills are paid, of course.

Worse thing that happens is you find out it is not what you expected. You sell it and move on. But at least you found out for yourself and got to experience something you may otherwise not have.

Just my .02 cents and you are welcome to apply it to your bills.
:D

I own #1 RSI in 7x57Mauser. It is one of the finest rifles in my rather substantial collection. It occupies a place in the same safe which houses my Blasers and Dacotas.

If they made one in .308, I would already own one!!

Always have wanted one. Maybe will just get a low recoiling .243 model for coyote hunting or just to take to range and shoot.

The Ruger #1 is a sharp rifle. Pictures of them look good, but they look even nicer in real life. I saw a few #1s in .25-06 at a gun show last weekend. If they had been in an exotic caliber one of them would probably be sitting in my safe right now.

Ruger made 308's for years in the No 1 RSI.

I had a 7X57 and wish i had back. to me, the RSI is better in the short mild cartridges because it has only a short 18 inch barrel. I like them in 250 savage, 7 x57, 257 roberts, when you load them in high pressure modern cartridges seems the muzzle blast is extreme. 30-06 in a 18 inch barrels barks
270 or a 2506 really barks

I have never been a fan of internation style stocks. Not just the No. 1, but the M77 too. But, they are beautiful guns as are all No. 1's. Why? Well they would make a great hunting rifle, but a good all around gun as well. One shot at a time is all you can take anyway. If I found a regular No. 1 for 500 bones, it would be in my safe in no time flat! :)
