opinions on a pocket carry gun

Taurus TI 85, kel-Tec P-3AT or P-11 or 642

All work for me. I also like Lasergrips on the Taurus for late night carry. The P-3AT gets about 85% of my carry time.

I use a Kahr PM9 -- after its functioning problems were repaired -- and sometimes a Glock 27 as pocket guns. In deeper and looser pockets -- such as you find in cargo and similar pants -- and in wallet holsters, they do bulge a little but are not recognizable as guns. I have also put a Ruger SP101 and a Colt Agent in my pockets. These actually bulge more due to the fatter cylinders, are more difficult to hit with and have sharp and unpleasant recoil compared to the pistols. On the plus side for a revolver, its more rounded contours and lack of slide protrusion, as well as not having protruding sights, make it slightly easier to draw from the pocket.

Taurus ultralight Protector .38spl

Look into the Taurus Ultralight Protector model. It's .38spl and weights only 11oz(unloaded). You can get a Crimsontrace lasergrip for it and it will not snag or fumble in a critical incident because of the Bodyguard type hammer shield.

For a .357/.38spl check out the S&W model 649. It's the same design but weighs more.

Another vote for the J

I pocket carry the S&W 340pd & Love it. However, it is at the top end of what I would consider "pocket carry" for the pants I usually wear. I looked at nearly every other option before plunking down so much $ for a snubby, but found that no other gun could match the 340 for weight/firepower. At less than 12 oz unloaded it is a handfull with 125gr .357s. It's also loud enough to cause a B.G. to slip on his own feces as he tries to run away if you miss.http://www.thehighroad.org/images/smilies/eek.gif On the other hand, where as I find the little pocket rocket quite accurate and fun to shoot, my dad hates it & can't hit the broad side of a barn with it if he were standing in the hay. At 61 his hands aren't up to the pounding. It's not for everyone, but give it or another J a try before making your decision.

I had gone to a class once and watched an instructor fire 3 shots point blank into a target from a vest pocket...sure the vest was toast, but it was impressive to see the firearm function w/o problems from w/in a pocket....that's why I like wheelguns in a pocket ;)

Pocket carry?

A j-frame, preferably an AirLite 340 or AirWeight 642 if you are partial to revolvers.

The Kel-Tec P-32 and P3AT are BUGS, not primary defense pistols. You can make a case for the 9 mm P11 but it that is a whole different class of pistol--a double stack 9mm, albeit a small one. If you want the weight and bulk of a double stack 9, get the reliability that goes with it, and buy a Glock 26/27.

Now, back to a semi auto the size/weight of a j-frame?

Kahr PM9. Period.

Oh yeah, Kel-tec PF9..which means you'll wait Probably Forever 9mm...

Thank you all very much for your input. As soon as I can get together a bit more funds I will be one my way to the gun shop. As soon as it get it I will post some picts. Again Thanks,

P3AT is my EDC now. Next up will be a 642 and a PF9. Briefcase or man bag carry is a CZ SP-01 with a Surefire X200. Options man ...options!

Pocket rockets!

For a couple of decades, I tried to find the perfect pocket piece/back up....
the closest I have found to give the power and reliability I wanted was the Jay frame revolvers...the 642 is a great CCW gun, but not the easiest to shoot well, or reload fast.
An ex-girlfriend bought a Kahr PM-9 and I really liked that...more ammo and power, easier to shoot, quicker to reload. I kept saying I was gonna get a PM-40...but the project is one the back burner for now. They seem to be reliable pistols from what I have heard.......might get the nine instead of the forty....but I cannot take it with me overseas, so I'll wait abit(I'll have lotsa money when I come back!)

I just picked up a CZ 2075 RAMI in .40 S&W today. I've been carrying it around in a Uncle Mike's pancake holster to get used to it. It's a bit thick to be a trouser pocket gun, but I foresee it spending a pretty fair amount of time in overcoat pockets as we move into winter. FTR, it is about as pocketable as a Keltec P-11.

I carry my XD .40 S&W subcompact in my pocket a lot.

it weights just over 20 oz's and fits in most jacket pockets, or pant pockets. it's not bad considering your getting 10 rounds of .40 S&W for personal protection, and you can add a small tactical light to the front, or an internel lasermax sight. You can get either the .40 S&W, or the 9 mm in this frame. Of course, the nine will give you 15 rounds instead of 13 in the .40 S&W using the full size magazines.

The top picture is the 9mm, and the bottom the .40 S&W with a lasermax.

:)

Of the two you mention, I'd get the Kahr...

If I had free reign, I'll add another vote for the P3AT!

Kahr P9 in my pocket as I post. At just over a lb. (17.7 oz.) it's on the cusp for jean's pocket carry, but works for me. With more baggy pants, it's ideal.

How effective is a 22 magnum round for self defense? What is the smallest quality gun for pocket carry that fires this roung? Years ago I bought a S&W640 for pocket carry, but realistically it is only for a jacket pocket. Much to heavy for dress slacks or shorts. But I am intrigued by the idea of the 22 magnum, something I never really considered because I assumed this round is not very useful for self defense at close distances.

22 Mag

One in the medulla oblongata at the base of the neck would do it. What are the odds, though, of having THAT shot even close in?

I'd certainly consider a 22 mag it if I could depend on my nerves and shot placement.

S&W's AirLite Scandium Alloy 351PD w/ 7 shots weighs in at just over 10 oz.'s

The Kel-Tec P-3AT (.380 ACP) is a very popular pocket gun. It's inexpensive, small and light. Shoot 200 rounds to break it in, and 40 rounds of whatever you plan to carry to make sure it likes them.

If you want a more powerful caliber, the Kel-Tec PF-9 is starting to ship and will be available in volume at the consumer level in a month or so. It's a single stack 9mm that is only .88 inches thick, and most people think the thickness is the most significant dimension when picking a pistol for pocket carry. The outline (height and length) is almost identical to their P-11. It's a little large for a true pocket gun, but I plan on using it as a pocket gun as soon as one becomes available locally. In general terms, the PF-9 uses the barrel or the P-11 and the improved trigger group design of the P-3AT. A previous post claimed 8+1 capacity, but actually it's a 7+1 9mm, and despite it's small size it will shoot +P ammo. Kel-Tec has an excellent lifetime warranty with fast turnaround if you should need it, and that's rare in the gun world.

I'm something of a Kel-Tec fanboy, so take the recommendations with that in mind.

I have a 10mm Glock 20 in my pocket as I write this, and I'm looking forward to trading its 40 ounces fully loaded for the 16 ounces of the PF-9.

I do like the Glock reliability. Hard to go wrong there.
