looking for something jacket pocket sized.

needs at least 8 round capacity, DA/SA trigger, around 4-500.

considering glock 27, xd, Walther P99AS, and M&P compact. Really want the DA/SA trigger though. The taurus PT740 is nice and slim, but i am sure there are more out there i cant think of.

what else is out there i should look at before deciding?

when you get to small, think and try shooting them first
yeah, you can get a .40
but in the same package, a 9mm often gives as good or better performance.

I've been carrying an XD subcompact .40 for about a year and a half now and I have nothing but great things to say about the pistol. Very accurate for a 3" barrel, eats all sorts of ammo with no problems and It's never had any sort of jam, FTE or any other problems. Just like every other gun made, it's not for everyone though. Some people don't like the ergonomics of it and prefer "X" instead (insert favorite brand here).

I don't think you could make a bad choice from the ones you've listed, they are all quality pistols. Beretta makes the PX4 Storm and Ruger makes the SR40, but I can't actually say I have any personal experience with either one.

I'd highly advise spending as much time getting your hands on multiple guns and at least holding them to see which feel good and which don't.

You can't go wrong with a Glock (3rd generation) or an M&P. You'd never regret either of those choices.

Love my 740...

I also have the 709, and YES the 740 is snappier. Manageable, though. Ever shot a Kel Tec P40? Talk about SNAP! Same frame as the P11. They stopped making them, though.

FOR A REASON
how would you feel if half your product was returned for service cause people can't shoot it

the problem was/is the shooter limpwristing the P40, not the gun

M&P compact is the bees knees. Can get lightly used(like new) for $450-500 essy.

Im selling a Kahr PM40 for $500 right now. It's on this board, just search for posts started by me.

Darn nice pistol. I hate to let it go, but I need the money :(.

No doubt. I understand the reason, I also understand that I never limp-wristed it. Had NO malfunctions, whatsoever and still HATED to shoot it.

We have a winner :)
I bought mine about 15 years ago when they were first released (s/n less than 350) and have carried it daily. I have never had a single time when it failed to feed, fire and eject over the course of 6500+ rounds. I replaced the mainspring at the 5000 mark just because. It is flat enough to carry easily and has enough heft to be comfortable to shoot. The grip fits my hand perfectly and the rather long da only trigger is plenty smooth enough for precision shots without being as easy to discharge as the Glocks. I bought a G27 and tried carrying it for a few weeks and went back to the Kahr.
YMMV.....

The Kahr is probably the thinnest .40 you can get. I have a number of Kahrs but they fall short of his 8 rd. capacity. The PM40 is only 5+1. The Glock 27 and M&P40C are good for carry but are not DA/SA. The FNX40 is 14+1, 4" barrel, DA/SA but... a bit large for carry depending on many things. It may work for you.

A few months ago, I was foolish and impusive and sold my M&P40c. I had so much sellers remorse that I just replaced it with the same. This is the most comfortable carry piece I have found. I'm sure there are others I would like but this is staying.

SIG P239 7+1, my first SIG, I now own 6 SIGs. The SIG P239 will out perform many much larger pistols, and in my hands everything on your list. I would not buy anything in your size requirements without shooting it first, may make for a short list pretty quickly.

I love the M&P's just great feel to it, easy to break down. I carry a full size M&P 40, but my bud carries the compact, I like the feel of the compact just as much. I like how much easier it is to conceal even more. Just a great line.
