This is the final episode of a three part series comparing the performance characteristics of various projectiles shot from a Colt style 1860 Army cap and ball revolver. In this series we will measure the accuracy, velocity and muzzle energy and penetration of round ball versus conical bullets. This episode will examinef the performance test of Kaido's 240-grain conical bullets.

I noticed the "DONG" sound was much louder when it hit the metal gong with more authority.

Whoever made the laws probably thought they were weak, a good charge of powder and a ball or conical bullet is downright deadly in these guns.
Levi,

It has more to do with not allowing more than a single shot. That's why they don't want repeaters (revolvers).

Great video! 40gr of 777 with 210gr HP is pretty much my standard load. I use all 6 chambers. I'm very thankful that Ruger has that "in between" notch to lower the hammer on.

Is it the number of shots held by a revolver that they don't like? Is it kinda like that rule where you can only have 3 shells in your shotgun when you hunt ducks? We have that rule in California, you are being legal as long as you only load 3 shells.

Most states consider blackpowder as "primitive" in that you get one shot before you reload. If you have a blackpowder revolver, you're getting more than one shot with a reload. The MS state legislature got retarded a few years ago and now allow any single shot rifle .35 caliber or larger to be "primitive." All the hunters who wanted "one more deer" stopped buying black powder and all bought Rossi HandiRifles, nearly killing the blackpowder sport here.

Did you test penetration with the full 40gr load as well?
If not, could you make like a bonus shot of that?
And stand really close!

Great set of vids. Always like and enjoy your efforts.

Is there any chance that the low velocity in each conical string came from the same chamber?

Nice series Mike, I was wondering what the performance differences were between conicals and RB. Id like to see the numbers from the same test done with a Dragoon or Walker.... Just to compare to the 1860.

I have to conclude after watching the first two videos that, as far as those two projectiles are concerned, you're all wet.:evil:

Sorry, I just couldn't help it.
:D

If you are using a ruger this question does not apply, but what about the pressures with the heavier bullets and powders charges and stress to the 1860 revolvers?

I also wonder if the lighter 220 gr conical might be a better killer if it tumbles in flesh due to more rearward center of mass.

I have noted that it was more commonplace to use Conicals in .31 and .36 caliber revolvers (By the molds that came with the guns) and the .44 being more of a military revolver shot mainly round balls (Probablly due to Gov't purchases).
I would expect a big power increase in the .31 and .36 caliber revolvers using Conicals and in the case of the .36, paper cartriges were more common than .31's. Hence, the .36 was a natural for the Conical.
For "Our" uses of the big .44 Conicals make more sense, for target and Hunting and you can really increase power levels with the 240 gr Conical! Balls are faster and easier to reload in.44 and I use them almost exclusivelly. I also use Balls in my .36 for the same reasons and you get pretty good accuracy with a ball!
I wonder how much "pratical" gain a .31 Conical gives? Is it really worth the expense and other hassles? I guess with a .31 you go for all you can get!
I am sure if one were to use a B/P revolver for "Social" purposes, they would likely opt for the most F/P energy and load Conicals rather than balls. I wonder if the gunfighters used conicals??? I wonder?
For G/P shooting Balls make the most sense cost-wise and for speedy, easy reloads. However the Gas Checks on a Conical make for a better Gas seal and anti- chainfire protection. I use Felt Wads with balls every time.
