I have noted that it was more commonplace to use Conicals in .31 and .36 caliber revolvers (By the molds that came with the guns) and the .44 being more of a military revolver shot mainly round balls (Probablly due to Gov't purchases).
I would expect a big power increase in the .31 and .36 caliber revolvers using Conicals and in the case of the .36, paper cartriges were more common than .31's. Hence, the .36 was a natural for the Conical.
For "Our" uses of the big .44 Conicals make more sense, for target and Hunting and you can really increase power levels with the 240 gr Conical! Balls are faster and easier to reload in.44 and I use them almost exclusivelly. I also use Balls in my .36 for the same reasons and you get pretty good accuracy with a ball!
I wonder how much "pratical" gain a .31 Conical gives? Is it really worth the expense and other hassles? I guess with a .31 you go for all you can get!
I am sure if one were to use a B/P revolver for "Social" purposes, they would likely opt for the most F/P energy and load Conicals rather than balls. I wonder if the gunfighters used conicals??? I wonder?
For G/P shooting Balls make the most sense cost-wise and for speedy, easy reloads. However the Gas Checks on a Conical make for a better Gas seal and anti- chainfire protection. I use Felt Wads with balls every time.
