I'm thinking of picking up a couple of RRA stripped lowers for future buildouts. Anybody have positive/negative reports to relate regarding these lowers? Better alternatives?

Yeah, the prices are enticing (their site shows 140 bucks for a stripped lower). I thought they would be a nice hedge against future legislation that I could build out at my leisure for very little initial investment, and almost everything I've heard about RRA's AR parts has been good. I figure if the lower is a good part, I've got a great foundation to build on.

I like my RRA lower better than my Bushmaster. Tighter fit in the rear shelf area for no wobble, better finish overall with less tooling marks.

rock river rocks. i have one of their national match setups. no complaints at all. their service is excellent too.

i didn't know they were selling stripped lowers that cheap... i think i'll add a couple of those to my wish list.

(p.s. buying more than one at a time gets extra FFL paperwork, right?)

I built an AR using a Rock River lower receiver, very good product! It is worth mentioning that the company (sub contractor) that makes the RRA lower receivers now offers the same receiver with their own brand name on it, Stag Arms, it is made to the same specs as the RRA and is a bit cheaper.

RRA receivers are on back order almost everywhere due to the rush after the ban ran out, Stag Arms receivers are in stock at Eagle Firearms, that's who I got my RRA from before the Stag Arms lowers became available.

Thanks for the tip, g56, I did not know that (and it seems they are not allowed to disclose it on their website -- but one can reasonably infer it).

RRA lowers are the way to go. A friend and I have built 3 AR's sine the AWB ended using RRA lowers. All of them went together very well and shoot very well. RRA lowers is the way to go.
my $0.02

What 762x51 said......

I sold my Bushmaster Ak-shorty summer before last because I was offered about $200 more than I paid for it. (I also couldn't entirely fianance the S&W Super-9 NIB w/3 barrels that I got, w/o selling the Busy- so, I couldn't resist)
That left me with my flat-top heavy match bbl upper w/freefloat tube foreend.

I waited a while to replace it to see if AWB would sunset. (It did!)

I got a RRA to replace lower because of less wait and lower price than Bushmaster.

I got the complete lower assembly for $240 out the door.

I've put a J-P single stage adj. trigger back in it (removed from Bushy before sale, along with my ambidextrous safety and DPMS target grip.

Now I'm back to shooting my 1/2" groups with my AR upper!!

I did not even need the rubber tightening bushing to prevent upper-to-lower wobble, reciever is VERY TIGHT. Magazine well is also tighter than any other AR reciever I've dealt with (Colt, Bush, DPMS, Olym).

Also, the KUH-SPRONNNNNNGGGGGGGG of the Bushmaster is a kuh-spronk! with the RRA. Much less annoying spring twang!!!!! Noticed that at the very first shot.

My vote goes to the RRA.

I've heard "somewhere" that RRA lowers have some sort of "non standard" contouring inside the lower which makes some trigger work more difficult - sort of like the steel block Colt puts in their lowers, but not as extreme.

Can those with 1st hand experience comment on this?

I have done 2 builds using the RRA lower and no complaints here. I would use there lowers again. I heard the shortage started mid summer after the DEA Rifle contract stuff started. My dealer sold the first lower to me for $100 the second one was $140. :(

I might try the Stag lower on my next build.

I believe what you are referring to is the interior width of the reciever in the rear shelf area that I spoke of above. It is true that RRA/Stag (both are made by Continental Machine...Stag is the "house" brand) have a tighter fit in this area. This is why there is less upper to lower play or wobble. Never heard of it effecting trigger installation though.

When the ban expired just about every brand of lower was on back order, not just RRA, there was a huge run on AR's and parts to build one when the ban ended.

Stripped lowers are easier to come by now than they were, RRA's are still on back order just about everywhere, but some of the other brands are now available, like the Stag Arms lower receiver. :D

Thanks everyone. I'll definitely look into the Stags. The price is very good, and it sounds like there's little or no difference from the RRA lowers (in fact, it sounds like they ARE basically RRA lowers, except less expensive). I'll poke around the 'Net a bit and then talk to my FFL.

This is very good information as I was just considering picking up a few RRA lowers. I've had some good experience with RRA uppers and their NM triggers. If the quality of their lowers is as good as those other parts, I think I'm gonna be a happy camper.

I want to second 762x51 -- comparing my Bushmaster lower to friends' RRA lowers -- the RRA ones are noticibly better.

If Bushmaster wants to stay #1, they'd best start paying more attention, or they're gonna do a Kimber.
