I know i'm gonna stir up a storm but i believe it is the most overrated caliber. I bought one because its all i can afford to plink with. Its fun to shoot, yes. But a 8mm, 3030, 12 guaeg slug, are all way more fun to shoot. Centerfires give a kick against your shoulder, telling you its ther, can drop game bigger tahn a groundhog, make that bang we all love. I say they should stop make rediculously huge amounts of 22 and make centerfires cheaper.

I am almost hesitant to patronize this thread since I disagree so passionately. If I could only have one gun in one caliber it would be a .22lr

If there ever was a jack of all trades in the gun world, the .22 is it.

I grew up shooting .22s from 9 years old. I've never gotten tired of 'em and with a well placed shot, they can bring down big animals in emergency situations. My uncle carried a little Browning auto everywhere he went outdoors, was rarely without it when outdoors.

Won't increase your testosterone level, but it will increase your accurate marksmanship. I get enough recoil on goose hunts with my 10 gauge. I like .22s for plinking.

They wouldn't make "ridiculously large amounts" of .22 if there were no demand for it. You ever had any economics courses???

The .22 short will be 152 years old this year. Introduced in 1857 for the first S&W revolver, was the first American metallic cartridge. It is still used all over the world and in the Olympic games for the rapid fire pistol event. If the .22 rim-fire was useless or out dated it would not have lasted this long. It's cheap, relatively quiet, available every where, made by umpteen different manufacturers in a variety of loadings. It can be very accurate at 100 yds or more. It's simply the best metallic cartridge.

.22lr is the most fun caliber there is. You may not get the biggest bang but you certainly get the biggest bang for the buck. As far as it being overrated...:scrutiny:

I was at the range today bouncing a can around at 100 yards while waiting for my centerfire rifle to cool. Fun and acurate round.

I agree shooting a .22 lr can be boring to compared to say a .223... however .22 ammo is sooo cheap. I also don't shoot my .22 lr with a scope. Buy one with iron sights, a peep sight, get some kind of old tang sight on there and their beauties to shoot. Also shooting with a buddy or two and the fun begins.

I personally bought one because everyone has to have a .22 - I was thinking a .17hmr but the price of ammo drove me away which is why I settle with a .22lr. I have had great success with the federal bulk 525 pack. Works like a charm.

I absolutely love the .22! It's cheap and low recoil, and is my favorite caliber. But I voted for "a plinker and not much else", although it makes a good small(I do mean small) game round.

The .22 is probably the most underrated caliber out there.

As for "making centerfire rounds cheaper," I don't think you understand the basic concept of materials cost. .22s aren't dirt cheap simply due to economy of scale.

yep 22 lr is useless.. unless you're using it. :D

My 39A and a few boxes of 22lr make one hell of an afternoon plinking ..... but when it come to varmint control you very seldom need more than one.

the 22lr is the most useful round ever created, it made the most successful transition from black to smokeless powder(still highly popular), i know used to know people who have killed deer with a .22, its a wonderful round, cheap, accurate, and just plain fun to shoot. just my 2 cents.

.22LR is my favorite round, but I am going to centerfire because I want to start reloading.

I agree with KBintheSLC

Great round. I bet your day will be ruined if you get hit with a round out of a rifle.

Im sure it would suck to get hit by a round out of my old RG revolver but not as bad as the rifle.

Again... KB has it right.

I won't tell my 4-year-old daughter what you think of her favorite rifle.

I say they should stop make rediculously huge amounts of 22 and make centerfires cheaper.

As far as the economics of it goes, which centerfire caliber should we all agree on to make one load as common as the .22LR? You name it, and we'll see if everyone can agree!:)

I have been shooting for years and have found my interest seems to cycle around . I seem to focus on just a few types of shooting for a while but usually I find myself returning to other types of guns/firearms that have sat in the back of my safe for a time.
Some of the time I shoot very little rimfire but it has been something I return to again and again.
I am not a rich man and when money is tight rim fire is something I can always fall back on.
One of the fun things of shooting sports is that it is not just one sport , but a whole bunch of different things to different people.
Make what you want out of shooting !

if 3030 was as cheap as 22 id plink with a 336 with peep sights all day

I prefer 22 magnum, since I have a rifle in that chambering, not much use for 22 LR for me. I do have a Ruger 22/45 pistol that is really fun, very accurate.

I love the ol' .22... :)

If -- heaven forbid -- I were restricted to owning only one caliber, it would be the .22LR. I would train tirelessly to be the "Zatoichi" of .22's, able to hit a fly with my eyes shut from 20 paces.

At least I won't go broke in the attempt! ;)

Sir,

The 22LR is in MHO the best caliber of all. If the SHTF and I could only take 1 weapon and only the ammo I could carry in my backpack it would be my Kimber K22 Hunter
and 6,000 rounds of Wally World .22 Federal bulk pack ammo.
