Hello all. My brother is wanting a 1911 and since I know very little about 1911s I thought I would ask some questions. I told him to get a P90 or a Glock as I think those are a better price to shoot .45ACP.

Are they any good? I have never heard of High Standard. I understand that they are made in the same plant as the RIA 1911.

Just wanted to get some opinions.

I have the American classic ll Metro Arms 1911 made in the Philippines. Fault free, good workmanship/fit and finish. Do a search here at THR there are a few threads on the Philippine 1911s. Have only heard of one pistol that seemed to be messed up do to some quality issues. If I bought another 1911 it would be the metro arms......just me

High Standard is probably best remembered for their 22 LR pistols. Excellent quality at an affordable price. My first gun was given to me by my dad when I was about 10 years old and it was a J C Higgins sold by Sears and Roebuck that was made by High Standard. I'm 51 and I still have it and it shoots great. That was a long time ago......

I don't think the new products coming with the High Standard name have any affiliation with the old High Standard out of Conneticut which made the 22 pistols.

So the company in Texas bought the name, rights, and assets of the Conneticut company after it went under. Same name, different set of operators.

Does it have the sight and thumb/grip safety upgrades like the RIA "Tactical" model? If not and it just has the GI-style "hump and bump" sights, the price is a C-note too high, IMO.

I have the basic GI model That you speak of Lone haranguer.
great gun for the money I paid $ 400.00 out the door at Sheels Sporting goods 3 years ago.
so yup its about a C-note to much IMO as well. That being said i have had zero probs with it. were over 2000 threw now.

If your brother has a few more dimes in his pocket he may wish to look elsewhere. I'm not suggesting in any way that the High Standard won't work but there are others in it's price range that are built better. A nice Springfield Armory (forged in Brazil, assembled in Illinois) is in every way a better pistol. Beyond that, Colt, Dan Wesson, S&W or Kimber are names to be trusted and reckoned with.
