I have a complete lower receiver sitting around looking for a dance partner. Yesterday, I ran into a smokin' deal for a DPMS complete upper w/ mag in 7.62 X 39 but I'm wondering -- are they reliable? accurate? dependable? ...you know, the usual? :D
TIA

They work OK, sort of.
High capacity magazines never really panned out all that well with the AR design and 7.62X39 cartridges.

A better bet is seeing if Alexander Arms will make you an upper in 5.45X39 Soviet, a much better choice.

S&W is suppossed to produce the M&P15 in 5.45X39 also but no uppers as far as I am aware.

Id buy the 5.45x39 design in a HEARTBEAT. Can't beat those ammo prices. And besides, I don't think a coyote or gopher is going to argue about the politics or ballistic effectiveness of my chosen round :D

My Model 1 7.62x39 AR is easily one of my favorite rifles, having proven to be both accurate and reliable through ~1500 rounds so far:

Magazines have been a hitch with this configuration. The out-of-production frankenmags (shown) work fine, but they require a little hunting to find. C Products new production 10 rounders work fine as well.

I am actually considering putting another one together now.

Alexander Arms is supposed to be putting the "Genghis" back in production.

Also, Teppo Jutsu (the 458 SOCOM guys) are supposed to be working on one.

At the moment, I think the S&W version or finding a used Alexander Arms Genghis from back when they were making them are the two games in town. (And good luck on the second option -- I think they quit making the Genghis because no one was very interested in them back in 2002 and 2003.)

Why do you want the x39 upper?

If it's for ammo costs, I'd get a .22LR upper or kit.
If it's for hunting, I'd ask what you're hunting and if it's small-medium say 6.8SPC. If it's medium-large, maybe .450 Bushmaster or .458 SOCOM.
If it's for accuracy, I'd say 6.5 Grendel.

This topic comes up frequently. I'd suggest doing a quick search here; you'll find a bunch of feedback. I usually post in these threads, because I've built several and spent 4-5 years hunting deer and hog with an AR15 in 7.62x39.

The short version is that I like the round and the rifle, and I have zero problems using it. It's done well for me.
