Oppressive heat.....

My San Saba lease has seen it really bad as well. The owner just moved his 46 Angus head off. The cactus are wilting. I'm not saying that for effect, the cactus truly are curling up & drying out. Never seen anything like it.

How is Northern Texas looking right now? My buddies and I are headed down middle of Sept for a hog hunt right outside Decatur TX. I know southern Kansas is pretty tore up right now. NE Kansas is dry but nothing like down that way. We have had 28 days over 100 degrees so far. Heck this is just the beginning of August. Highest temp reached has been 114 over last winter we got down to -19 degrees. The only bad thing about Kansas you get both ways.

jbkebert,

Traditionally, September in Texas tends to be a dry month (lacking any disturbances in the Gulf), so expect your hog hunt to be concentrated over water sources or trails leading to them.

The hogs on my property are using even the smallest water holes for relief, but are not showing up until well after Sundown when things have cooled off (relatively speaking).

I set up a camera last night on a water hole that has NEVER had hogs visit it (to my knowledge). It is a mere 200 yds. behind my house right in the edge of pasture....so its not inviting to hogs under normal circumstances. Got some now though!

I'll post about it in my normal sticky thread...but wildlife of all types are being affected by extreme heat and drought conditions here. Well..maybe the Horned Toads and Spiny Lizards are O.K. with it...but everything else is suffering.

Its funny i have hunted TX in Sept a couple of times now. Once was 100-104 degrees and you just cooked. Last year hunting the same property it rained two days. The first evening fairly hard. The next morning things were still cool out. Got to my stand and it started to rain again. I froze my butt off. Down around 50-55 degrees.

Like a dummy i didn't bring rain gear or even any long sleeved shirts. Heck it's TX why would i need that stuff in my pack. Think i'll bring it along this year.;)

Flintknapper - Know the feeling all to well as we live in near to the same neck of the woods. Had to Drive up to Wally world on saturday and I forgot about the steering wheel on my truck and left a nice little burn on the palm of my hand. Still hurts. Not to mention my ac hasn't shut off all month.
Man do we need some rain.

We've had a hot summer here also, course, not like you folks in Texas. Haven't had much rain since early summer, just dark cloud blow through and lightning. I did see something very disheartening yesterday morning, I saw a small cottontail rabbit I thought was caught in a snare or wire...... turned out he was so small and uneducated in the proper way to drag a full canteen, he was alright!

It's the worst I've seen in my almost 50 years here in extreme north Texas. Since last October, we've had about 1.5" of rain here at my place. Back in April, a wildfire burned all the grass on my 55 acres plus about 20,000 more acres west of me. My tank went completely dry and right now I'm trying to clean it out. We have a forecast high of 110° today. We've been over 100° for something like 75 days this summer.

Actually, September is our 2nd wettest month (here in the Wichita Falls area) with May being the wettest. That being said, there doesn't appear to be any rain on the horizon anything soon.

The Wichita Falls area is around 70-75 miles NW of where we are hunting. I may bug you from time to time for weather updates.

We will be hunting a 10K acrea high fence ranch. There are several small creeks and a tiny river that run through the property. I figure to concentrate my hunting around some low areas that may still be moist. The hunting will be harder and easier if that makes any sense. The animals should be held up and more concentrated. It will be harder on the hunter getting in and out of these places without spooking game. The heat isn't much fun to sit for hours on end without moving much.

I am still excited about the trip. Just getting a little anxious about hunting tactics. Hunting after dark is a pretty hard proposition with a bow.

Yep, I know where Decatur is as I pass through it 2-3 times per month. Unless you come down I-35, and then west on US380 to get to Decatur, you'll likely pass through Wichita Falls.

As far as hunting hogs, I rarely go out specifically to shoot hogs. I do however shoot them when they show up on my place and when deer hunting. They are very strange, mostly unpredictable animals. In my experience they seem to be patternable when it comes to food, but not water. Around my property practically all the water sources are dried up save for a few tanks here and there. One of those few tanks happens to be not more than 300 yds. across the fence from my house. I can see this body of water easily from my house and have YET to see a single hog in or around it. I see deer most every evening watering there.
Also, I have a feeder and camera set up a little over 100 yds. from my front door. Again, not a single hog. I know they're out there because I see there tracks regularly. Where they're getting food and water totally escapes my because the area for miles around me is a total wasteland because of the fire and drought.

Good luck in Decatur.

Makes me really appreciate living in Northern Arizona. Temp this morning was 47 degrees, and it hit a high of around 80 today (of course, we're at 7000 feet altitude). Used to live in the pressure cooker called Phoenix, and even that's probably more comfortable than much of the Midwest.

Growing up in rural Tennessee in the 1960's and 70's, I don't recall things getting this hot.

+1. We have only one remaining tank on 800 acres; middle of the property. The hogs are forced in as soon as the heat subsides enough to allow them to move. We generally start seeing them at last light, right now that's around 8:30. We sit 70 yards from the water; taking them is like fish in a barrell. I only do this once a month or so; our presence keeps the deer from coming to the water. I dont want to see them leave the property.

I am getting a little off subject. Does anyone have any advice for a bowhunter in this heat wave. We have a young man coming down with us who is 16. He had worked his tail off and paid for his own trip. He came up empty last year after working hard for the money. I know all of us want this young man to connect. He has paid his dues.

35 Whelen we will come down 35 since it runs right through Topeka. So a pretty straight shot. Unless we get hit with road construction again. Last year around Gainsville we got caught up and cost us almost 2 hours.

This is my second summer in Oklahoma. Holy burning hades! Everything is brown here. It's unreal. I wanted to do some hog and 'yote hunting this fall. I guess that's out.

No rain at my house in Terlingua since August 21st, last year. Some rains north of me brought the creek down, so the remaining pools and puddles are a big help to the wildlife.

JBK: "A little off the subject"

If I were bowhunting under these conditions, I would be taking a close look at the nearest sources of water. Set up as dictated.

All of Texas needs rain in the worse way possible but after Hurricane Ike, please no more talk of wishin for a hurricane.

north alabama has gotten the rain. tons of it, in fact. problem is it's still 100 degrees with 100% humidity. its like slogging through a 112-116 degree sauna all day long. nights only get down to 85-90 degrees. crops are about 50/50 simply due the scorching though. wildlife is about as nocturnal as ive ever seen. just too blasted hot. good luck all!

NE Kansas is seeing some releif. We went from 100+ degrees with no rain for over a month. Temps over the last week and through next week are upper 80's. We received about 1.14" of rain yesterday. Which brings our current total for the month up to 2.76" all of which has fallen in the last 8 days.

Corn crop around here and soybeans still looking pretty punky. The bad thing is the rain and cooler weather arrived just in time for ragweed to flourish. My eyes and nose are telling me dove season is upon us.

Lucky me

I had any number of choices where I could serve in my last assignment; we looked at all the climate data and I decided to go with NW Oregon, we havn't hit
90 degrees here this year yet.

If know your pain folks; I remember my times at Killeen, San Antonio and Barstow where it was so hot, the windshields in parked cars would bust out.

The humidity in the SE was the worst for me and my "Joes", I frequently ran mainline IVs in the arms of my machine gun crews when I was in Kentucky, I also ordered our medics to run a lot of rectal IVs when I was in Georgia (USA). The humidity seemed to be the worst (it was supposed to be a scare tactic to compel them to drink enough water:D).

Speaking of ambient cooking, I seen a memorable segment on a cooking show(the galloping gormet); he talked about how the brittish horsement would prepare a meat patty and stick it under the saddle until meal time. I guess it didn't need any salt eh?

Texas, you are in my prayers, you too Baghdad.;)

We had a cool spell here in north North Texas. The thermometer plummeted to 72° Friday night and 99° has been our high for the last three days. Sounds silly, but 99° feels pretty good after several days of temps around 110°!

Perhaps someone finally hit the cool switch. NE Kansas yesterday was 106. Thurs was 102, Wednesday was 100. Today being Sat high was hit this morning early of a good ole 82. Highs for the next week are mid 70's with rain.

Now can someone kindly hit the switch in TX. We have less than 3 weeks before our hunt.

Between the heat and the chiggers, I have decided I ain't stepping outside again until it frosts!

I went and shot a buddy's cross-bow nearly two weeks ago.
Neglected the Deep Woods Off, as I only stepped off the gravel into the grass to pull arrows out of the target a couple of times.

Now my legs are so covered with infected chigger bites I'm thinking amputation might be easier to deal with!!

TS Lee hit any ya all yet? ( LA, Miss.) if so how does temp drop (radical) and possible flash flood affect game habits?

Currently 75 in West Texas at 11 at night. High of 83 tomorrow. Might be the first time I turn off the air conditioning since April.
