I want to put a scope on my remington 597 and was wondering how much magnification I should be looking for. I've seen some good deals on used 3-9x40 and fixed 10x40 bushnell elite scopes around where I live and was wondering which of these two would serve me better on a .22 which I'll be using just for plinking at <100 yards. I've never purchased a scope before and I know very little about optics in general so any help would be great.

I have a Tasco 3x9x40mm on my little Marlin M60. It's pretty darn accurate @ 100yds.

Hee Hee Hee,
I just love my Model 60 too! Mine's still unscoped, but I've got a Simmons 3X9X32 on my 25MN (.22 Mag) and it's a really nice, bright scope. Cost me around $50 at Natchez on sale. Slick

4x or 6x fixed or a 2-7x or 3-9x variable unless you're wanting to do super benchrest stuff.

I have some nice scopes but I've had a Busnhell Banner Dusk & Dawn 4-12x AO on my 22 magnum that gets quite a bit of use. It's a bit bigger than I wanted but I wanted an adjustable objective. Never had a problem one with it. Holds it's zero perfectly. Just checked it this evening and it was dead on at 75 yards.

I don't currently have a very nice 22lr but if I ever get around to getting one of those Kimber I've been drooling over, I'd like to get a Leupold 6x with AO.

Yesterday, I mounted an extra Leupold 4-12x40 AO scope on my new Remington 541T .22 and I must say it fits the bill very well!!! Not to much nor to little, even at 50 yards...

Never hesitate to spend money on good glass, you will have it forever and it will seems as $$ well spent every trip to the range!!

My CZ 452 wears a Bushnell Banner 4x12x40 Audjustible Objective, about $100, even cheaper on the web. Works very good for me, though I tend to stop at 10X for the power setting as eye relief gets more critical at the higher magnifications. Well pleased, think its a very good piece for .22's. What ever you get it's worth getting the adjustible objective for good focusing at close range.
