Happy New Year friends! I'm building an AR for my wife (thankfully I got the parts before they were all gone!). She'll be shooting in the 100 to 300 yard range. I've got a 1 - 9 twist 20" Krieger barrel. We'll be sticking with 55 to 62 gr ammo. Target shooting and probaby varment when she's ready. I used an upper with a left side charging handle, so no worries with trying to grab the charging handle under the back of the scope (like on the one I built for myself). The guns already getting a little heavy, so weight may be a little issue, but she'll probably be more bench or stick shooting, so don't let weight be a factor. What optics do you suggest? I'm not going cheap, but $600 may be my upper limit. Thank you in advance.

Well if used for target work and varment you will want a scope of atleast 4-16 power. Check at SWFA for a one stop place to review scope then shop for best price.

Weaver classic V series with the 223 rectical

Sightron SII has several in those power ranges

Nikon M223 series

SWFA still has a few of the Sightron scopes on sale with an additional rebate of $50 to $100. This is a very reputable company so please do not be turned off by the price of this scopes as they are as cheap as the BSA or BARSKA. This scopes have excellent glass and a great warranty, lifetime replacement, and great customer service. I have 2 of the Big Sky scopes which saved me over 50%.

I have a nikon monarch with bdc reticle mounted on my ar-15. I was very impressed with the bdc reticle. I have mine zeroed at 200 yards and took it out to 500 yds without dialing in. Just dropped down to the 3rd circle on the reticle and had back to back hits at 500 yards. I zeroed with 62gr bullets so I know I am good to 600 yds.

My favorite scope for the AR-15 in 223 is the Springfield 4-14x40. This scope has not neen made in a few years but can still be found reasonably priced on ebay and is still guaranteed for life by Springfield. Calibrated for 223, this scope has an internal level bubble so it's easy to correct canting the rifle.

Prices on ebay should be under $500. I picked up one a couple of years ago for $250.

The Weaver, Nikon and Vortex mentioned above are all good AR scopes. Nikons a great value.

Get a good mount. LaRue or ADM. Burris PEPR is ok.

I have a Nikon 3-9X40 scope on my AR 15 and it been great so far, price is $200.00. It's got clear sharp focus from edge to edge, it's bright, and has positive clicks on the adjustment knobs and can't be knocked off easily, and the reticle is very fine so it doesn't hide your target at distance.

I have a Vortex Viper HS 5-15X44 on my LR 308 and it's a fantastic scope for the money, price is $500.00. It's very bright, very sharp focus, very fine reticle, side focus for parallax, knobs have very positive clicks, can be set for zero stop. This Vortex is only made and sold by Midway and they are back in stock as of today.

Both scopes hold their focus and settings just fine. Both scopes have lifetime warranties and great customer service. I use Burris PEPR scope mounts for both rifles and they work great and don't cost a lot.
