kimberfan anybody know what mount is on this M-14?
The rear is a SAGE rail mounted in the stripper clip guide.
The front is a Springfield Scout/Socom rail mounted on the barrel.

Kimberfan:

I've got an M1A Scout 18" rifle wearing an ARMS #18 mount, Leupold QRW rings and a Leupold FX-2 4x33 scope. On the scope I currently have one Stoney Point elevation knob for easy distance adjustments, and at some point this summer it will get a second one for windage.

The best groups I've shot with this rifle were 1.25", from a bench, using 168gr Hornady HPBT match handloads. Typical groups with 150gr surplus grade ammo run about 2-2.5" from a bench or 3" from prone.

I did have the ARMS #18 rattle loose on an exceptionally rocky and bumpy jeep ride last year during elk season, and I removed it to complete the hunt, relying upon the iron sights instead.

Locktite is your friend with this mount. Apply it to the rear clip-guide mount as well as the receiver screw. Make sure that the front elevation adjustment is well down against the top of the receiver, and that the locator ridge on the side of the receiver lines up properly during assembly.

Also: remove the spring from the front elevation adjustment screw. Invert the concave washer so it provides for a fixed degree of elevation, screw in the elevation adjustment screw further, so that the mount cannot bounce and by bouncing, flex the tightness of the rear clip-guide mount and thereby loosen it.

I can remove the bolt from my rifle without removing the scope mount.

I just re-installed the mount about 3 weeks ago and re-sighted in. I'm still testing for tightness or any loosening after installation, but it seems fine. In about 150 rounds, I've had 2 stoppages by empty cartridges impeding the rotation of the bolt or forward motion of the op rod. I will be having my mount modified to remedy this problem.

If I cannot have the extraction/ejection problem fixed and the mount installed in a reliable way where it doesn't shake off from rough use, I won't keep it on the rifle.

I'm using it for a SHTF/defensive rifle, typical ranges will be 75-250 yards and 500 yards at the max and it has to be able to be used at night if need be.

In that case, I'd opt for a variable. 10x is a PITA at short range.

Personally, I'd get a forward mount for the ranges you indicate. I can still ring the 500 yard gong most of the time with an AimPoint. It's is the thing for short range, has an illuminated reticle for night use, and has a battery life of 50,000 hours for the CompML3. About $450 plus $25 for an Aimpoint mount.

Unfortunately, I've blown you budget, because the Ultimak scout mount adds another $200 to the cost, but it is the one to get. You can always start off with a lessor sight, or find one on ebay.

thanx for the help ya'll!

guntech

theres only one Aimpoint i like and thats the AA M4 i think?

anyway its way to much money for me.

my max budget is about $580 for everything

thats way the EOtech is nice i can get it for

$377 shipped

and that leaves me $200 for a mount :D

so what mount would be best?

and is there any other really good reflex sights in the 300-380$ price range that take AA's????

The thing with the Eotech you will run into is that it was designed with the M16/AR15 in mind. It sits too high for a good cheek weld with the M1A. You are going to have to add some sort of cheek rest.

The Aimpoint CompM4 is nice in that it uses AA batteries, but the CompML3 with minis still has a battery life of 50,000 hours. That's 5.7 years if you never use the off switch and leave it set on 7 out of 10!

For quick and dirty, the AimPoint low works fine at $25.

Both the Aimpoint and EOTech sit too high on the M14 type rifle.
For best results you will need a cheek rest.

My EOTech equipped Mod 1 has a Magpul CTR with a snap on cheek riser.

If you use an Ultimak rail and the low Aimpoint mount, the Aimpoint sits low enough to be coincident with the sights. I plan on removing my Karsten cheek piece because it is no longer necessary.

Notice in the picture below, the Ultimak rail is level with the receiver, unlike all the other rails out there.

GunTech, you must mean the Aimpoint "high" mount. There's a "high" and an "extra high." I have a CompC3 1x on an Ultimak with a "high" ring and the front lens cover actually rubs the rail it's so low.

sadly i dont have enough money for my sight and a new JAE stock

so

would that cheek rest work fine?

guntech

what cheek rest is that?

links?

and i still cant decide on a mount its between the Ultimak, the sadlak aluminum, or the SEI from Fulton.

When it comes to "the ultimate cheek rest" I give the nod to the LAW483 M14 MCS from TROY.

Check with LAW483 for the Ultimak rail, SEI scope mount and a cheek rest.

I got the 7 inch Smith mount, though if Sadlak had their titanium in stock I would have gotten theirs (a bit pricier, but worth it weight-wise, I think). However, the Smith has been flawless, and not budged after about 3k rounds through it. I started out with the SWFA SS 10x, which worked great for longer stuff (longest I shot was 1k meter steel), but for shorter stuff it was ungainly. I've been messing around with an Eotech and a Karsten cheekrest, and co-witnessing it with a GG&G mount for a PVS-14 NV (which is a REAL blast).

Here's a couple pics of mine with the Karsten (which I love), and the 10x SWFA.

(I cut out the grooves on this pic, to move the mount further forward and to lock it into place)

40 rounds, and if I hadn't been such a flincher, it would have been a lot better.

The eotech, with the PVS-14

With the Eotech at 100 yards: Flincher.....
