I own a few .308 combat rifles, all are iron/combat sights. I got a Springfield Armory M1A standard loaded, walnut stock I want to mount optics on. any ideas on what mounts, optics from you M1A owners? I plan on using it for 200-300 yard hog hunting.

ARMS 18 is said to be the best available. I don't have a scope ony M1A scout but if I do it will be on an arms mount.

I would consider a scout mount, probably the Ultimak since it is the lowest you can get. A red dot like an Aimpoint would do you just fine if you're only shooting out to 300 (and you can get a co-witness with one on an Ultimak rail), but if you feel like you need magnification, a 2.5x or 4x scout scope would work great too. The scout mount is nice because you can get the optic low enough that you can get by without adding a cheek riser.

If you want a receiver mount, consider ARMS, Sadlak, and Basset. Personally I prefer the ARMS because I like to take the optics off and shoot with irons a lot, and the ARMS is so low that it doesn't get in the way of the iron sight picture at all. The other mounts have a little window you look through for your irons, and don't work if you adjust elevation up for the longer ranges. If you put anything on a receiver mount, be prepared to figure out some sort of cheek riser to get cheek weld.

I mounted a scope on mine using a springfield 3rd gen, while not the best mount it does work well after some work is put into it. If I had it to do over again I would just go with a whole new stock.

I have a Bassett low Picatinny mount. It is a one attachment, three contact mount that is secure, quick detach/restore and well thought of by the M14 community. I use low Weaver rings (as recommended by Bassett) and a 3.5-10x40 Leupold scope, although I'll be interchanging my Leupy Mk 4 3.5-15x50 scope between that and my Rem 700 SPS Varmint. I had gotten the Leupy 3.5-10x40 with the Duplex reticle in order to be able to rotate the scope in the rings 90* if the ejected brass hit the windage knob cover. It didn't, as it turned out.

See www.bassettmachine.com for further info.

Other good mounts include Sadlak, SEI and the 4th gen SAI mount.

I have the Bassett an its great, love it. So simple its amazing. I can't see wanting any other. I have the High Pitcanny with low scope rings, set just above the irons so i can still use the irons without taking it off. I have a life time warranty on a Nikon 3X9 Prostaff BDC scope that has held up excellent. Its around 175.00 for the scope. Been shooting all the way out to 740 yds.

Mine is a GDI G1 OSM mount, it has 3 points of contact, 4 set screws. The side of the reciever, each side of the stripper clip guide, and one more on the forward top of the reciever. Pretty solid.

After seeing the current MSRP, I'm glad I found mine several years ago on ebay.

Dryhumor, can you still use your irons with that on? I only live about 40 miles from Bassetts shop, will look into them too, I just want to get the right one cause I am planning on putting a spare Weaver Grand Slam 3x10x50 on it and still be able to look thru my irons.

Here is my current setup: ARMS #18 mount, Leupold QRW Medium rings, Leatherwood/Hi-Lux CMR 1-4x scope, and an ATI cheek rest. The medium rings let the scope barely clear the rear sight when it's at my 250m BSZ setting. The QD rings are nice, and with the scope removed I can scrunch down on the cheek piece and still shoot with the irons if I need to (though it would be a lot more comfortable to take the cheek piece off if I have time).

+1 on the Bassett scope mounts, they're easy to put on and take off, and return pretty much to zero with no problems.

I'm at the lowest elevation. I have a 1/2 minute hood on mine. I can use it, but have no adjustment. Both windage and elevation are centered, and there is an opening to sight through. It's useable, once you figure drop and ranging.

A standard aperture would most likely have a little bit of adjustment, but I don't have one to try. I kind of figured that taking the rear sight completely off, and fabricating a custom rear may be worth a try. The duel flip up types for ARs come to mind also.

Though nice, the sight channel wasn't the selling point for me. I was more interested in the mount itself.

If I was that close to Basset's shop, I'd go there. See what they have and how you like it. They may modify a mount how you want it, if you feel what they have isn't what you want.
