Optics for Marlin 1895g????

I will be getting a Marlin 1895g this week. The deal is it's not going to be used very much at all and I can't see paying a crazy amount of money for the optics. However I do plan to go with the XS base and maybe a set of ghost ring sights but I'm not sure where to go from there (removable bases, Leupold bases and rings, weaver, scout scope.... etc).:banghead: If you have one of these or have set one up please feel free to give me your opinion and include some pics if you've got any. As always thanks for looking and have a blessed day.

i got one in stainless a couple years ago. all i've done to it was put the XS ghost ring sights on it. they are very fast and easy to see. IMO for a short handy gun like the 1895G firing the .45-70 it is better to go with ghost/iron sights rather than add more weight and throw off the balance with a scope. Practice with the ghost ring sights and you can be plenty accurate out to 100 yards and beyond if you're good.

What type did you install? I like the look of the low pro on the scope mount even if I didn't plan on mounting any glass.

How about a dot sight? Then you could use the long eye relief available on the XS base, in a quasi scout-scope setup. Nice thing about a non-magnified dot sight is you can use it with both eyes open -- the red dot just floats there. Put it on whatever you want to destroy, pull the trigger, it's gone.

I like the 30mm Ultradot. Strong enough to withstand pounding from magnums (many dots won't), works well in sub-zero temps, affordable (under $150), and comes with a real USA warranty (ie, you don't have to go to china to collect on it).

Try An NcStar 2x7 pistol scope on your scout rail. The eye relief is perfect. You can find them for about $50. If you find you like the scout concept you can upgrade.
I upgraded to A weaver 1.5x4 pistol scope.but it is not really better then the Nc star just more money. I used Leupold QRW rings. I think the NcStar comes with rings but you will probably not want to use them.
I like the scout set up on my 1895GS

Both eyes are open with any scope if you are using it right. A low powered scope mounted conventionally is pretty quick to use and can be an advantage in low light situations at close range as well as providing some magnification for longer ranges.

You don't mention a budget, for one person $300 might be considered a cheap scope while it is over budget for others. Don't go too cheap on the 45-70 because recoil will beat up some cheaper scopes that may work fine on a 22. Something in a 2-7X made by Leupold if you can afford it would be a good start. The Nikon 2-7X-32mm scopes at around $130 are pretty good too.

XS Lever Scout Mount, DRC WINGED 1895 GHOST-RING SIGHT SET and an Aimpoint Micro T-1.

I also have a Leupold FX-II 2.5x28mm IER Scout Scope for my Guide Gun :)

chromedome82 Is that a can for your 45/70 I see in the top right corner?

I wish!, but no - it's a .30 caliber can for my M14s and 7.62 AKM.

Here it is on one of my MK14s

still impressive though.... I believe I'd rather spend my $$$ on a tax stamp for one of those fellas before I'd drop it on optics!

I have an 1894 in 44 mag with a Swift 1.5 x 4.5 x 21mm and I really like. Great eye relief, very clear, gathers light very well. It's slim profile looks appropriate on a lever gun as well. Not bad glass for just under $100

I run mine with the XS ghost rings. It is an awsome set up.

That's what I have on my '94 (no optics), but I have XS lever rails, 1.5-5x scopes, Warne QR rings and XS back up sights on my '95s.

Here you go...
My Marlin Guide gun W/Leupold VX-I 1-4x20mm
I also have Marlin's .44mag trappers carbine with a scout mount and a leupold 2.5 scout scope in quick detach rings and a williams peep sight as a back up sight.
Both of these are great options and would work well on your guide gun.
