Fellas,

Need some help for a newbie -

Pretty set on power (4X-15X range).
Would like at least a 50mm obj., a robust scope that can hold a zero after many adjustments.

After some research, narrowed it down to 2 scopes, both Mil Dot

Nikon Monarch X - 4-16x50
Leupold Mk IV - 4.5-14x50

I've read good things about both, Nikon X has better glass, better turrets....Leupold MK4 is tried and tested, the better brand...yadda yadda

Anymore information from people that have experience with either?? Any other scopes I am leaving out? wanting to stay under $1k (no Nightforce/SB etc) but not wanting a cheapy that may fade out after use.

Scope will be on a Savage 10FP .308, hoping to shoot 300-800 yards :)

Thanks for the help

Try Sightron great glass for under $740 delievered from Liberty Optics. They are not listed on their web page but they carry them. The guys at liberty optics are great people to talk to , ask for Scott .

Thanks for the tip.
The price looks good. I was looking for target style turrets but this may be a good option.

I used to work at cabela's and got got a lot of first hand customer feed back on each companies customer service department. Leupold is flawless in customer service but it comes at a very high price, just no questions asked. Nikon I've heard will gladly fix any product failure but will almost never give you a new one if they have trouble fixing a problem. User error like dropping a scope on a rock is questionable whether they will fix you up although I do have some customers tell me that they have fixed user error. So nikon's customer service is not as tight as leupold's.
the nikon beats the leupold although the leupold has diamond coat to protect lens from scratches which was important for the military in desert environments, to my knowledge nikon does not have such protection also price point is way better 899 for nikkon, leupolds are 1400 or better.
IOR valdada I think is another incredible tactical scope maker check 'em out on swfa.com

If you're flexible look at the Nikon 4-16x42SF, you can add on target turrets (#6004) and a sunshade (#7162) yourself. Best pricing is from AMAZON.COM for all that stuff(believe it or not) - $366 for just the Nikoplex version, add on for the other accessories.
4-16x50SF from AMAZON is $457 in Nikoplex.

The 4-16x42SF and 4-16x50SF has 40 MOA adjust range, you'll need around 30 or so for .308 at 800 yd, use a sloped (20 or so MOA) base to maximize adjustment.
I don't believe Nikon offers mildots for the 4-16x50SF, just Nikoplex and BDC. The 4-16x42SF does have mildot as an option according to Nikon's catalog.

The 4-16X42SF would be bright enough for normal daylight usage on a range at max magnification (worse case exit pupil diameter 2.6mm)

i would go with luepold. they are more geared to tactical scopes. you don't see nikon in the military do you. the clarity is also better along with the qulity.
