Optics Planet is backordering orders in order to raise prices during current surge in prices

I hope this is appropriate and I understand if it is not. OpticsPlanet.com is doing the exact same thing Cheaper than Dirt did in 2012 when they committed company suicide by cancelling orders to raise prices. I ordered 500 rounds of Aguila 115gr 9mm on Oct 10. It was showing available for .20c a round. They then sent me a backorder notice out to some distant date that will never happen. But in the meantime they broke all of the cases down to 50 round boxes and priced them .28c a round. Available right now. So they have it, they just won't ship it. And the kicker is they even admitted it to me over the phone two different times that they will not ship it because its worth more in 50 round boxes.

WIlling to lose a client and get a bad review over, what, $80??

Hopefully some of you read this and avoid the same issues.

Has anyone else had the same experience?
I never used them much, a few small parts here and there over the years. I'm pretty sure they hosed me on a barrel and took $171 from me but I never bothered to address it for whatever reason. I never did like ordering there, slow shipping and constant backorder. I think midway is slightly better and would use them before Optics Planet. There are better sites to use that I think are faster and cheaper.

OP remind me of NYC/NJ Grey Market camera equipment dealer from the 2000’s. “Canon 70-200 2.8L IS, $499”

Midway did me wrong once, but only once in a decade of ordering clearance stuff. But you get your order in non-Amazon fast time

Doesn't surprise me, Optics Planet is one of the worst internet retailers I've ever delt with and it was on my very first order.

I've never bothered with them since. They don't deserve any business, they deserve to be put out of business.

It's been years since ordering from either one.

I'm in the market for 5.7 ammo and they have it. I ordered some on 10/26 and it's being delivered today. I've also ordered random gunsmithing tools from them, and it was the same normal, experience.

I was seeing it for about $0.45 cents/rd and I think even $0.40 cents somewhat recently on Palmetto State. Such a hoot to shoot.

I've been using ammoseek.com for cheaper prices on ammo as of late. Also get a bunch of ads from PSA about AAC ammo being on sale. I also follow MrGunsNGear on Telegram and Twitter/X (same posts but different platforms) for sales on ammo and other stuff.

Three pages trashing Optics Planet so far, what are we accomplishing here?

But dragging Midway into it? I get the CTD mentions, but for many of us, Midway has been a go-to resource for years (it has been for me, I'm a loyal Midway customer) and while it may have hiccups (like any online retailer), its customer service is typically above average.

The thread title suggests a very poor business model of a company that wouldn’t last very long. I don’t share the OP’s view or personal experience.

Optics Planet has never been a stocking dealer. They have always ordered from manufacturer's and wholesaler's warehouses. I have ordered several things from them at very good prices and have been satisfied.

Lets see if I'm a sucker or I got a reasonable deal. What would you consider a good price for 9MM JHP ammo from a top American ammo manufacture when buying a 1,000 round lot? Consider it current production but old school JHP with a solid reputation.

Bought a new pistol and wanted to run 500 rounds of my carry ammo through to prove unconditional reliability and then have 500 rounds left for carry use.

I kicked OP to the curb many years ago. They'll claim they have eveything in stock and sit on your order for months. Sometimes the cheapest price isn't the best deal.
Yeah, that don't work from me. I'm not a patient waiter when I order things. Idk why, I'm pretty patient otherwise. I'll spend a lil more money to get something a lil earlier, don't ask why. That's one of the reasons I won't use OP. Like I said I am quite certain they never credited my account for a canceled barrel and once others shared the same experience I recalled the same as others, order something from them "in stock" and then when the order gets placed "item backordered".

That's beyond bogus. It's kind of fraudulent, no? False advertising and fraud are the same thing aren't they?

I don't do business with Optics Planet, CTD, or Dick's Sporting Goods. All have shown disdain and hostility towards the shooting public. CTD and OP are downright scammers. I don't understand why anyone would give them business.

All small time compared to Botach Tactical back in the day...

Maybe we just learned to stop using them. They still are getting a goodly number of complaints at BBB.

When a retailer is drop-shipping items from a distributor or manufacturer unnecessary shipping is avoided and some cost saved but the downside is, that the retailer is at the mercy of their own suppliers for any price increases. Since cases are back-ordered, which are most likely drop shipped, but single boxes are available could be simply caused by OP having small quantities to mix and match in their warehouse that are already paid for.

Three pages of rants, rushed verdicts, condemnation that is bordering slander and no thought of in dubio pro reo are sad in a forum that otherwise is very civil.

I like Midway! not the cheapest but definitely the Amazon of the Shooting/Fishing world

Even the price of just the .355 diameter bullet is at or over $0.20 each now, just looked at midway in prep to start reloading 9mm again.

$0.10-.11 per right now. Only place I get projectiles from anymore. Sometimes run into delays shipping but they communicate really well.

PSA has their own brand of ammo now and they normally have 5.7 in stock for better prices than anyone else.

Never have and never will order from Optics Planet. I vet online merchants before I use them, and my vetting of OP reveled a lot of similar complaints.

I also had a bad experience with Optics Planet and will no longer use them for anything. Pretty sure they are a drop shipper. When something says in stock, they think it's in stock at whoever they drop ship it from. Usually it isn't.

I've never had a problem with MidwayUSA and I just received a package from them yesterday.
Being a Missouri company, I'd rather give Midway my business.
