I've purchased 2 orders now through Opticsplanet.com and now I'm pretty sure I'll never use them again. Here's why....

I ordered a cheap Leapers scope mount for a cheap red dot scope I have knowing that it would be a cheap product. It was about $14. When I got it I used a torque wrench to install it using settings that were HALF of what were recommended for a similar Burris mount I have. I immediately stripped out both bolts that held the mount to the rail. I was able to replace those bolts with a product from my hardware store and the mount does the job.

When I went to do a review I was completely honest about the product. I gave it 4 stars for value, 5 for something else, and a low rating for quality. I can't remember the exact rating I gave it.

Today I got an email back saying that my review had been denied. Wow! So I went back to the product and sure enough, every review was a 5 star review.

So I'll never be ordering from them again. Just thought I'd share my experience so others are aware. Don't be fooled by their highly rated reviews of products.

This is interesting. I have ordered from them before, but never posted a review. You should reply and let them know that you have posted on a forum the fact that they "Manage" the reviews. That is just deceptive.

You might also want to write an email to consumerist. The Consumerist

I had a great experience going through them. Wouldn't hesitate to do it again, but the place/person trying to sell me an item is the last opinion I want. When I want impartial opinion/review I come here.

I have had good experiences with Optics Planet, but stifling negative reviews is troubling to say the least.

Out of the three times that I've purchased something from them, I haven't had a problem. The main problem that I read about that people have with them is when they order a product that says "in-stock" when it actually isn't. All of my orders have been shipped within a day after a placed my order. No problems with them. Even with customer service when I had to cancel some orders.

I've ordered from them a few times. Once, when ticked off, I posted a decidedly negative review. They put it up there for everyone to see.
My review isn't there now, but the product isn't listed for sale, either.

I always found Optics Planet to be overpriced on most items. I can usually get the same item cheaper at some other online vendor or even gunbroker. I have yet to use Optics Planet for the many optics and other accessory related purchases I have made.

I dumped Optics Planet after I ordered a product they said on their web site was in stock.
A day or so later, I received an e-mail telling me it was out of stock and would be sent in a month. Okay, I waited. After a month, I received another e-mail saying it still was not in and would I like to wait another three months?
No.
I believe they never had the product. They sell, then try to get delivery of what they sold.

That's strange. Around a year or so ago I searched for night sights on a pair of XDs and they had the best price I could find.

I actually had one of the front sights lose it's illumination after installation. I called the rep at Optics planet and got a return authorization. During the removal the housing broke. I called the rep back and he said to send it in anyway.

I returned just the front sight and within days I recieved a complete set in return at no charge. Now I have an extra rear night sight. for an XD. They even credited me for the return shipping cost.

Even though my experience was positive, I don't think rigging the feedback system is an honest way to do business.

I purchased a Nikon D50 DSLR camera from them at a very good price several years ago.

I called them several times to inquires as to why the tripod that was supposed to be part of the kit was never included.

They called me several times asking why I had never put a review up on the site.

I asked about the tripod.

They stopped calling me.

So now, five years later, I still don't have that tripod.

I'd never do business with them. Low prices can't make up for service that bad and shoddy business practices.

I purchased a Pelican rifle case from them this Christmas. In stock, excellent price, arrived a day earlier then they said it would. Followed up with an email regarding the purchase. I wouldn't hesitate to order from them again.

I have purchased optics from optics planet and given reviews, and with some I have been critical, without them being edited or removed.

I have also purchased optics from hayneedle.com, with good results and found their prices better then optics planet, also with free shipping. I have also written reviews for them and some parts of them were also critical and weren't edited.

So maybe it was how you expressed your criticism.

Before I buy from some one on the internet, I do my best to get outside opinions and not from the published reviews alone. If both coincide I feel comfortable with purchasing the item.

I've never had a problem with Optics Planet, ordered from them a few times. Regarding reviews.....it is unwise to trust a single source for them, nomatter what you are buying, or from where. I think you are maybe a bit hasty to condemn them over a crap 14 dollar mount....you'd be better off never buying Leapers products again, rather than from Optics planet in particular I'd say.

Hey guys & OP,

At OpticsPlanet we do not filter reviews based on the scores. We believe that practice isn't intelligent and beneficial to us or the consumer. If a product is receiving low scores, it typically will experience a lot of returns and dissatisfied customers which are costly to our business and annoying for customers. So what's the point of preventing those from showing up on the site?

As people mentioned in this thread, there are plenty of negative reviews of products on the site as evidence of that. We hope everything we carry is a 5/5 product, but some aren't - with over 500,000 unique products and models, we don't get to try them all. That's why we want every review we can get, and always ask every customer to review the product they've purchased (and we include a 10% off coupon for customers who review their purchases, whether the review is positive or negative.)

We do have editorial guidelines though, and I can say with a high level of certainty that your review was not approved for one of the following reasons:
From: http://www.opticsplanet.com/reviews/guidelines.shtml

When preparing your review, please comply to the following guidelines:

Focus on the product and your individual experience with it.
Provide details on what you liked or disliked.
Please state your level of expertise.
If applicable, include the product’s model number.
Reviews must be written in English.
All submittals are reviewed before being published on our site to make sure the content of the review is relevant and focuses on helping readers understand the product.

We do not accept advertisements, spam content, references to other products, offers, or links to non-related web sites. Also, we will not publish reviews containing obscenities, discriminatory language, or other language not suitable for a public forum.

Use this reviews section for product reviews only. If you would like to contact us about our product selection, pricing, ordering, delivery or customer service, please use our Feedback Form.

I'm not accusing you of writing a obscenity laced rant. You don't seem like the kind of person that would. Sounds like you inadvertently included something that didn't follow the guidelines.

I can't say which reason yours was declined, but I'd be happy to find out for you. I'd need the email address you used to submit the review to find out (you can PM me) and I'll get the reason from the reviews team. We still want your review for the product. You can resubmit it at any time after you correct whatever issue the review had (and it was most definitely not the scores.)

Let me know if I could be of any further help and I'd be happy to do so!

I, for one, would certainly appreciate seeing a follow-up. Though I would never rely soley on them, I routinely review customer reviews as a part of my buying decision and have found them helpful in the past, both for positive and for negative inputs. Any company that would ever deliberately censure a negative review on a product they were selling would never see my business again, no matter how cheap their prices on goods might be. For the time being, I accept SandroM's explanation and wish his company well.

If it's cool with OP, I'd be happy to post the explanation publicly. I'd still need his email to get the information from the review team though.

I read reviews on products purchased through some of the cost comparison web sites. I suspect that reviews are more about the store than the product. I treat a review with some skepticism. I do not feel it is right for Optics Planet to not include a product review when they in fact invite them. Maybe they felt the review was redundant with other reviews and did not want to publish it.
