i listened to you guys about a year ago and decided to keep a carbine that i inherited. and other than the price of ammo at the time and the still current local shortage fo it, i love this little gun. i have cleaned it up since i got it, and now want to get it back to as close to origional as possible. it needs the barrel band the one that is there has the screw hole stripped out and a bolt with nylon lock washer on it. did the IBM carbines come with or without the bayonet lug?? it currently has one on it and i cant find anything online or in this forum that says for sure.

I am fairly certain that all USGI carbines were originally made and issued w/o the bayonet lug. Personally I am somewhat fond of it, as I believe it adds more to its story and history, but I can respect your desire to restore it to as issued condition (though the lug was almost certainly added by an armorer while it was still in service).

I remember when you were debating selling it, and I am confident that you made the right decision by keeping it...though I wouldn't have minded purchasing it off of you either. ;)

right decision

i AM sure i made the right decision...

i dont necissarily mind the bayonet lug, but have found a band locally w/o it that is unmarked and pretty close to the same price as i have seen the ones with the lug. if i could find a bayonet to go with it at a decent price i just might keep it..

but i was still wondering how it was origionally issued.

I am 99% certain that it was without, but I am sure that before long someone else will come along to confirm or deny. FWIW I wouldn't mind picking up a bayonet for mine either, but I want a leather wrapped handle (original WWII) and those are scarce and expensive; please let me know if you find a deal on one.

Enjoy it.

:)

IIRC the M-1 Carbine at first had a barrel band that was rather short and the screw held the unit on the left side along with the "D" ring to which the sling was attached. That was a Type 1.
Type 2 moved the screw to the bottom and changed the type of D ring the sling attached to, but there was no bayonet lug.
Type 3 was similar but had a bayonet lug attached to the inside of it which surrounded the barrel (IIRC). This was at the very end of WW2 and I don't think very many type 3s were actually seen in action in WW2.
What the IBM had would have not depended on it being IBM, but when it was made.
Also one should remember that after WW2 most all carbines received some rehabilitation or alteration, and finding out what it had when it "left the factory" may be a little hard, but there are books available for collectors that might break it down, atleast approximatly.

thanks for the info guys. i will be picking up a band with the lug this weekend and when i find an imperial leather handled bayonet for the right price i will get it

"...wondering how it was origionally issued..." Without. Bayonets were added during W. W. II or when the carbine was rebuilt after the war. 99.99% of all carbines went through a factory rebuild. All the wartime improvements were added. Mind you, owners also removed some of 'em since.
