My friend was given a 12 gauge remington wingmaster and he was wondering if it's possible to buy an 18.5" barrel for it and a mag tube extension. He's using it as a home defense shotgun. Are these available and where would be a good place to get them?

Yes, widely available in fact.

Corson's barrels, Remington itself, Midway, Brownell's,etc......

Mine came with both. Got passed to me from Dad and he had both barrells and the mag extention. I have no idea where he go them.

Yes, parts from the different trim levels of 870 are interchangable. Wingmasters are the more refined models of 870, and have better fit and finish of parts than the Express models, but you can put any 870 barrel of the same gauge on it. Choate makes a good mag tube extension that I can recommend.

Mossberg's replacement is still fairly expensive (100+). I had one on my Wingmaster. My gun was locking up, for what it's worth.

I'd get a factory Remington barrel or look on Numrich and Brownells. Do yourself a favor and keep it blued, even if you have to wait.

+1 for Mr. Clean, the Choate is good and is the only extension I know of that comes blued or hasd the option of coming blued. Everybody else is too tackycool for that sort of thing these days I guess.

The Mossberg barrel is a direct drop in for the Remington and functions fine. I have lost track of how many 18.5" Mossberg/Remington barrels I bought from Havlin Sales for $80. I hated it when they sold out.

Beware advice from a guy that cannot remove the barrel from an 870

CTD has the Mossberg barrels for < $100. You can find new 18.5" Remington BS barrels fpr about $115 on Gunbroker.

The Choate extension is fine but their barrel clamp sucks. I think a barrel clamp is an absolute necessity on a +2 or +3 extension.

Now that was a shot !

It is what it is. I grow tired of people who horn in on EVERY thread espousing the virtues of a particular brand.

AcceptablelUserName is all over the page and has no credibility in my neighborhood whatsoever..... The internet can be a horrible source of info if you take the advice of "experts" as gospel. I grow tired of these shenanigans quickly.

Mossberg even makes a replacement 870 barrel that I used on a Wingmaster pgo project I had. Worked great.

Let me recant and I am sorry to slur AcceptableUserName in this fashion. It was *another* 870 master ninja who could not remove his barrel... not AUN.

My heartfelt apologies....but all these shotgun (shottie :) ) experts tend to blur together after awhile.
