Last week I was looking for opinions on a Remington 1100 for HD backup. Well, after thinking it over, I went conservative and got the shotgun I really wanted. It is a 1976 mfg'd Wingmaster with a 26" barrel, nice bluing and really pretty walnut furniture with fleur de lis checkering. It is really good-looking and very smooth. I plan to buy a Mossberg mfg'd 870 replacement barrel at 18.5" with a bead sight. I also plan to buy a Remington +2 mag extension b/c they make them blued, which would match. First though, I want to shoot it this weekend as is. Three questions:

1) Are the Mossberg mfg'd Remington replacement barrels blued nicely?

2) Any suggestions on the mag extension?

3) Will the +2 mag extension exceed the length of the 18.5 barrel?

Thanks for any tips or thoughts.

MY suggestion would be to fire it as it is at first to see what you like and don't like BEFORE you spend the money on after market trinkets. If something else is desired, then go accordingly.

The Mossberg blued barrel for the 870 looks good on a Wingmaster. The + 2 extension will be just to the end or a little shy of the end of the barrel.

Why not try to find a 20" barrel with rifle sights. Then match that up with a +3 magazine extension. Some BGs count the rounds of their opponents. With the +3 extension they will count 6 instead of 7. Drop behind cover as if you are reloading. When they think you are out of ammo and they charge you, SURPRISE you have one more round left and its just waiting for them. Just a little tactic I learned years ago when semi-auto pistols started showing up in police holsters.

well, if you want the opinion of someone who actually has used the SAME setup your describing THEMSELVES, here goes:

The Mossberg barrel is blued pretty nice and matches well. If your gun is a 2 3/4" only gun make sure people shooting your gun don't mistakenly stuff three inch magnums into to the barrel, as it's marked for both.

Be prepared to smoothe out the chamber. Mine came rough and needed some polishing. I do this on every shotgun chamber now anyway prior to even shooting.

+2 extensions by and large won't even go to the end of the barrel. I'm not sure who's making a flush fitting +2 these days, but it isn't Choate. I believe MAX100 does (great product), but they're strictly parkerized. The Choate is the only one that makes a blued extension to my knowledge and they work well, although if I could grab a MAX100 or a Scattergun tech and have it blued, I would.

highly unlikely, borderline downright silly and unusually bizarre advice

i just went through this as well. I got a older 870 WM from a friend for free. I put the Mossberg replacement 18.5" barrel on and the blue finish matches pretty well. I also went with a Choate +2 extension in blue and it matches as well. The extension is about 3/4" shy of being flush (estimation from looking across the room). Overall it worked out very well in fit and finish.

Install the tube clamp firmly and carefully and I would use Loctite on the screw or it WILL come off. The extension itself is great...if another clamp could be used, made by say Scattergun Tech or CDM gear, I'd opt for that.

Hello friends and neighbors // My Choate extension gives me 7+1.(I need another barrel clamp)

1976 Remington Wingmaster 12ga. 28"VR MOD and 18 3/4" VR (reworked Remington Imp)
I've had this since new and have no complaints. Here are pics in with HD and Hunting barrels.

They are beautiful as well as durable. I have taken mine hunting rain or shine and with simple cleaning it holds up well.
From Dove to Deer the 870 is a versatile, capable firearm.
For HD it is hard to beat as well.

I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.
