I always staple the receipt and other relevant paperwork inside the cover of the owners manual. All kept together in a file.

That is an excellent idea. Of course I say that .... because I do the same thing.
That is all well and good - IF you bought the gun and didn't inherit it like I did.

I’m fairly certain a lawyer can aid the recipient of a firearms legacy in preparing an affidavit swearing to the inheritance while carefully listing the firearms inherited (with serial numbers and perhaps a photo or two).
Of course most wouldn’t go to the trouble unless they’re valuable and it would be more for insurance purposes than to be able to assert a claim of ownership down the line. As always, talk to your lawyer for his (or her) advice.
