HI all. I don't know of a great many THR members in the Hudson Valley area, although there are a few of us. Of the ones that there are though, and those in the surrounding areas of NY, I'd like to organize a get together and have a range day. Post here if you think you might have some interest, or if you have any suggestions.

I'd be happy to take on the responsibility of keeping a mailing list and handle the general organization if anyone is interested. Any age and level of shooting experience would be welcome. Maybe it's a lofty goal, but in all seriousness this area (and this state) is one that really needs the firearms community to band together for our mutual good. Even if a few us get together and share mutual experience and knowledge, thats a start , right ? And aside from that, shooting is fun and it never hurts to make some more range buddies. :)

(P.S. I hope the mods wont mind me bumping this thread a few times on occasion, it's for a good cause. )

I live in ct and was wondering where you would have this shoot. It's a good idea.

Well, at this point in the planning I would have to say that's yet to be seen. I'd like to first establish a list of any members with an interest. To some degree I think the location of range facilities would need to be determined not only by what was available, but also take into account where people were coming from. There are public indoor facilities in Monore and Goshen NY which I am very familiar with, and I know they would be open to a group activity , but that also has it's downsides. Most notably varied restrictions on factors such as age, permits, firearm type , etc. Perhaps most optimal, would be a private club range facility which an interested THR member already belongs to which would be willing to to host something (maybe for a collective donation ? ). At this point though, I just don't know. Most of my goal would be simply to gather interest at this point.

Of course, if it's just a few people who have an interest in getting together informally, than that's much simpler. :)

I might be able to go for a day at the range like this, maybe bring my son along too.We live in Nassau County, on Long Island.

All the best,
Glenn B

Im currentley in GA, but I visit my hometown in Rockland Co. very often, Ill be watching this thread to see what develops.

p.s. Rockland is only about 15-20 min from goshen/monroe area. right off of the thruway. I think hudson valley area is the only area that refers to highway as the thruway...lol

new england has some decent places to shoot just be careful of where you go. I use to live there and some times you need to be very careful of where and when you choose to shoot.

Great Idea

I'm in Rockland County and I haven't been able to go shooting lately because of the cost. To shoot at my local range it costs me about 50-60$ to shoot about 100rounds of pistol ammo (not counting .22's).

Since I moved out of my parent's and started paying rent, bills, etc. There is not much money left to spend on hobbies.

I would definitely be interested in meeting up to do some shooting. I would really love to do some plinking (cans, clay pidgons, etc). I only tried that a few times and it was more fun than shooting paper targets.

Discharging firearms outdoors in Rockland County is a no-no. So I haven't had any outdoor place to shoot at.

I will keep an eye on this column to see how things go. It would be best to see where people would be coming from to get an idea of a general location for a shoot . Although I realize that indoor may be the only option, outdoor would be nice . Good luck

i live in nassau need to get my guns shiped to me from FL. anyone know how i would go about this? and is a kel tek sub 2000 legal in NY? i would love to go shooting with you guys

Hexidismal.

You being from upmthat way, maybe you know something about where these shooting clubs go to shoot. hoguh many are indicated as private access, my bet is they mostly shoot at public ranges of imited number in the area. Or maybe you know someone from one or two of these clubs, who could arrange for us to use a private range.

Note on the last one, the one at West Point. I did not include that hoping we could use it as much as I included it as a possible meet location for a day at the West Point Museum should we be unable to find a range.

Hex,

Me and you have talked before about getting together, I am in. Davis Shooting Sports in Goshen is a good place. It is a 100 Yard indoor range. It cost 15/hr for Handguns and 22.50/hr for long guns. Good people there. Maybe we can get a group discount or something. Here is the link.

Let me know what you think.

If you guys don't mind a drive, down to Long Island, and then to exit 68 on the Long Island Expressway, we could get together at:

Phone: 516-727-9881
Facilities include: Outdoor Pistol (10, 15 & 25 yds), Outdoor Rifle (50, 100 & 200 yds), Rifle Silhouette, Pistol Silhouette, Muzzleloading, Trap, Archery, Airgun
Range Access: Public

I don't remember how much Calverton charges but the Long Island Shooting Range charges about $22 for a complete day opf shooting rifle and pistol, and charges $5 per 25 clays for trap or skeet. All shooting with rifle or pistol has to be done seated from the bench, the biggest drawback, otherwise it is a decent place to shoot. On the other hand Calverton is basically a bunch of sand pits, with unsupervised shooting (last time I was there which was quite some years ago now, as I prefer the other pplace for safety).

These places do tend to get crowded now with hunting season upon us, so if you decide on one of these an early start is recommended to beat the crowds.

Just a thought, as I almost cannot imagine paying $22.50 per hour to shoot anywhere, and then shooting for any good amount of time. Wow!

All the best,
Glenn B

I would check with the Nassau County PD, headquarters, pistol license division; I beleive you can have them shipped to yourself if you have a NYS permit for pistols (nothing for rifles), but if not then to an FFL. That is my guess only, check with the PD. I don't have the number but their HQ is located in Mineola, NY.

Franklin NY shoot

Hey guys, sorry this is last minute, so many forums so little time:eek::(!!
My friend and neighbor and shooting buddy, MRIman and I are putting together an informal shoot on Sep. 29. This will be outdoors rain or shine (we will get a tent for cover) on a private range out to around 200 yds. We are planning a simple evening meal and will get at least one port-a-jon, depending on numbers. We will be asking for around $10 per person to offset these costs. More details when we get an idea of numbers.
Primitive camping (no electric or running water) will be available at the site and a couple of locally owned motels are with in about 20 min. ranging from $50 per nite for one person to around $80 for a room with two double beds and one single. More info if anyone is intrested.
This will be C&R and modern military and some sporting rifles and some hand guns.
Come join us for some BSing and blasting and maybe some intelligent firearms discussion!!!:D

That sounds like a great day carbineer. Actually just earlier today there was an open to the public pistol shoot in New Paltz, NY at the New Paltz rod and gun club. This probably would have been a perfect opportunity for this thread. Especially considering only about 3 or 4 people showed up to shoot, and they were only asking $4 donation per person. Unfortunately I only found out about it the day before, or I would have brought it to everyone's attention. *Sigh* A really missed opportunity, but they barely advertised it. They did however mention that though doubful, they may try to do it again sometime in october. I encouraged this as much as possible. I'll try to keep updated on the possibility of that happening.

I cannot make it to Franklin Cty. on the 29th.

New Paltz sounds like a winner if you can arrange for that. Many fond memories of times I spent in New Paltz when the age limit was 18 for legal drinking, and opportunity abounded in the form of, well let's just say the town was bursting with college babes, and locals.

new paltz rocked

I grew up in the area and still have family there. As kids we hit the bars up and down main street. The thesis was my favorite.

It is beautiful country there. I wasn't a hunter there but the locals always would make fun of the hunters coming up from the city saying that they would shoot the cows.

Sorry for not being more specific. We are near Oneonta NY roughly half way between Albany and Binghamton. Not exactly Hudson Valley ( western Catskills, northern southern tier, eastern central NY, some where in there!!;)) but close enough for a quick trip!!
Hope some of you can make it.

PS we have a couple of simple traps so bring your skatterguns too if you want!!!

On a side note. Anyone make it to the Syr. show this weekend???
Nice stuff, yet high prices in my book.

Ned,we need to get Tom more active on "the boards".

This one hasn't been discussed in awhile I know. I've been sort of looking to bring it back up again when the weather gets better. This is sort of.. unrelated , but I thought I might mention that the gander Mountain store in Kingston, NY is giving a free "Basics of Reloading" class on January 4th from 7-9 p.m. I'll be there. I thought some of you locals and semi-locals might be interested. I'll be there.

Kingston is a fairly long drive for me, but if I can swing it, I just may stop by. I have been thinking of getting into reloading, but have been very reluctant to just do so with info on the net or from a book. I kind of need that show and tell support from an instructor.

All the best,
Glenn B

I'm up in Syracuse and would be interested in a group shoot, as long as it's not too far away. My range would probably allow us to have one there at no charge. We've got a 25 yard pistol/rimfire range, 50 and 100 yard rifle range, and a clay throwing machine. It's not the biggest place, but it's outside and there's not too many rules.
