Greetings all. Just curious if anyone else here buys ammunition and mags for rifles they don't yet own, but intend to own in the future. For example, I've got magazines for the CMP M1 Carbine I don't own yet. Same with Galil mags. I surely don't regret buying 7.62x51 ammo when it was cheap, for the FAL I didn't have at the time. Currently I'm thinking of buying up some of the 5.45x39 ammo that is so cheap and plentiful right now. Probably some AK74 mags as well. You guessed it, I don't have a 5.45x39-chambered rifle....yet. Anybody else keep a real keen eye on the surplus market, and buy based on cost/availability, rather than immediate "need"?

Guess having accumulated 3,000 rounds of .223 for the AR-15 I want to build, but just haven't gotten around to yet qualifies. :D

Yeah, I bought some Beowulf ammo in anticipation of getting one, and I will have one soon. And I grabbed some grease gun mags before I knew for sure that I could get an AR lower that takes them - another that's not actually in hand yet, but destined for my doorway.

I also bought 1000 rounds of 7.62 while I was shopping for an AK, but that might not count as I had an SKS - but I bought it for the AK (which I now have).

Wow, that idea hadn't even dawned on me...yet :scrutiny: Interesting concept -- buying ammo/accessories ahead of the firearm :scrutiny: Maybe I should start buying some AR10 mags

you mean the 7.62X39 i bought, and used as motivation to go out and get the rifle?

or the desk drawer full of mossberg Accumag chokes for the 935 i want

Yes. That is how I have amassed my collection. I buy what is cheap...

<$2 HK91 mags
$2.22 AK mags
$2.50 FAL mags
$140 FAL parts kits
$99 AK parts kits

$75 per case 7.62x39
$135 per case .308
$119 per case 5.45x39

Sound good?

Anything that might be subject to a ban in the future could be a great investment.
When I sold my P95, I wasn't offered enough to part with the normal capacity mags I have for it, so I just included the two 10-rd ones that came with it.
The others are for 'later', or for a carbine, as Mrs Velo is hell on wheels with a 9mm carbine. Maybe she'll be a good spotter for me.

I bought 500rds of CCI Blazer Brass 9mm ammo, and I don't own a 9mm pistol (had to sell my G19 a while ago to pay bills...I'll get another one soon).

I pick up brass for every caliber I can, including non-reloadable stuff like .22LR and other rimfire (I don't bother with steel stuff). I sort it for stuff I reload (.30-06), stuff I will reload shortly (.223, 9mm, .45 ACP), stuff I won't reload (.257 Roberts, .204 Ruger, etc.) because I don't own nor can foresee owning a gun in that caliber, and stuff I can't reload (rimfire).

The latter two categories go into 5 gallon buckets for sale to the local scrap dealer. Everything else gets sorted by caliber (and if I have enough time, by headstamp) into gladware containers and put on the shelf until I get around to loading it.

I try to have a bunch of ammo handy, and buy stuff when it's on sale (~$6.50/50rds of 9mm Blazer Brass for Natchez). Next up: powder, primers, and a progressive press.

I don't usually, but I currently do have a stack of AK-74 magazines and about 700 rounds of 5.45x39 for a rifle I have yet to pick up. Sometimes it makes sense.
