The owner of a gun I want in IL does not want to deal with shipping to MN, even FFL to FFL. Since I am not an IL resident, I can't simply drive down and pick it up. Would it be legal to have a trusted acquaintance with an IL FOID card purchase the gun, then ship it to my FFL? Seems like both transactions would be legal and legit, but I want to make sure.

I'm not trying to weasel my way through the system, I just want to legally acquire a gun I've wanted for a long time. Thanks in advance!

As long as your friend can get it directly from the private party, all is well. If your friend has to get it from a dealer, then he is buying the gun on your behalf from a dealer which would be illegal. Private party, however, it is not illegal.

Would it work to drive down to IL, pay for the gun and accompany the owner to the dealer where we'd ship it to my FFL in MN? Are there issues with me not having an IL FOID card? He has limited transportation, hence the roundabout method.

As long as the final xfer to YOU is by an FFL in YOUR state, you should be good to go.

Make sure, in ADVANCE, that that FFL is will to accept a shipment from a NON-FFL party. I'm straightening out a mess like that for a fellow now ... lets just say he is going to end up owning the worlds best traveled and most expensive Glock 17 ever.
