I really like my Blackhawks as outdoor guns, very strong, very accurate. Much has been said for SA triggers on the DA guns, but I find the Blackhawks quite good for hunting or general outdoor use. Then there are the big cannons like the Freedom Arms, but lately, S&W, Ruger, and Taurus have been coming out with some cannons in DA.

I do have several revolvers I like to carry afield, but they're not the big hunting cannons. One's a .357 service sized 4" DA Taurus M66, then I have a couple of little J frame sized Rossis, one .22 M511 Sportsman 4" stainless and one M68 3" .38. My .45 Blackhawk is light enough for hiking and such, yet accurate and powerful enough to actually hunt with. My serious handgun hunting, so far, has been with a Contender, though, I'll admit.

So, what do you prefer, DA or SA for an outdoor field gun and why?

MC I have a SBH in 44 and that is a fine gun but - I guess I have gravitated a bit toward bigger cal and DA's. Not really for any reason other than main platform choice as against DA/SA.

My fave hunting cannons are either .454 long tube SRH or BFR in 45-70. The Ruger ''happens'' to be DA but sure needn't be. The BFR of course is SA.

In terms of useage I doubt any hand cannons will be used DA - certainly unlikely so - that sits well with me if all SA. I guess at an absolute pinch - If I had .454 SRH and a bear was causing a threat then I could (possibly) get a second shot off double just a shade quicker than single - but there wouldn't be much in it!

Anyone used to SA's can I expect claim pretty fast shootin' !:)

As I don't hunt, my outdoor is whatever suits my fancy. Mostly between my .357 Blackhawk, a 1911, or my S&W M28. The Blackhawk is out getting converted to .44spl now so it's out of the rotation until the spring.

I carry for self defense. The only times I've needed it were from 2 legged threats.
