I've been looking at the S&W 317 and the Taurus 94.

Best price I've seen on the 317 is $458 whereas the Taurus is $270. I intend on purchasing it to teach myself to shoot DA better as well as introduce my girlfriend to DA shooting. (So far she's only shot SA hand guns)

Are there any others I should be considering? I do not want a long barrel, 3 inch is preferred, but 4 is acceptable. This is why I'm leaning towards the 317, although cost is a factor.

You may want to look up the thread concerning Taurus' quality control and customer service.

If you're shooting a lot, I'd get the Smith.

I've read lots of negatives on the 317's extremely heavy DA trigger. J frame DA's are pretty crappy, anyway. A 4" 18 or 617 is a lot easier to shoot well.

A decade or so ago I had a 3" Taurus 94. It was a lot of fun until it stopped functioning, after a few hundred rounds. The factory fixed by setting the DA trigger at about 20 pounds and adding three hitches and some grit to the pull. Maybe they work better today, but I wouldn't gamble $300 on it.

For your purposes, I would look for a 4" Model 18 or 4 or 6" Model 17 Smith to use for double action training. Of course, Colts are always good too. I know... price. Do yourself a favor a either look at a 4" Smith 617 or go for an older Model 17 or 18. Yes, they are worth the extra money. Colt Trooper Mark III's in 22 can be had for about the same price. Check out the other active thread on the Trooper MIII; nice guns.
