Outrageously Great Deals on a Gun Purchase ... post your story!

I wanted a Ruger 22/45 Mark III Hunter. Ruger only offered them in stainless, which automatically adds $200 to the price. I didn't want stainless, either, because it tends to have a dazzle effect in bright sunlight. I found a distributor that had a custom distributor model in stock, blued, with a 4 1/2" fluted bull barrel and the HiViz sights. So I got the gun I wanted, with the exact features I wanted, brand new for over $200 cheaper. $450 instead of $650. I'd call that a good deal.

At a gun show, I was looking for a Mosin Nagant. I looked at all the ones the dealers had before I spotted a guy walking around with an M91/30 for sale. All the dealers wanted $110 to $130 for theirs, just for the gun. This guy's gun had a better barrel than any of the dealer guns, and he only wanted $75. Came with bayonet, ammo pouch, an 4 stripper clips, and 20 rounds of 7.62x54R, along with tools and a US-printed manual. Score! As an added bonus, he'd used it and cleaned it, so no cosmoline!

About a month ago I bought a MAADI Misr-90 AK-47 off a guy for $350 with 2 hi cap mags, a 5 rounder, plastic gun case and sling. I kept the sling, switched out two crappy AK mags I had for the nicer ones I got with the purchase and then promptly traded it for a like new S&W 360 airlite scandium .357 with CT lasergrips, nylon holster and some ammo. Basically I got a $800 revolver and a few extras for $350.

I offered a guy $200 for a nickel 3rd model 32 hand ejector with original walnut grips, I rated it about 90%. He said "I don't think it's worth that much, give me $150". Seemed like our roles were reversed, but I didn't argue.

I bought an irish contract enfield for 150. It wasnt wrapped, but it had -0- wear. The guy (FFL dealer) selling it at a gun show was clueless as to what it was, and I wasnt about to tell him. I even talked him down from 200. :what::evil::what:

I collect enfields and just about died right there when he said "OK". Walking out of the gun show I turned down an offer for 300, and an offer for 500. And they just thought it was a pretty enfield.

I also bought a matching No. 3 Lithgow (ww2) with matching bayonet (lithgow, WW1 flavor) for 200.

All matching No. 5, without import stamps, for 280.

Very nice non-head-bonker-ed K31 for 80.

Mint in cosmoline M24/47 for 80.

These were all recent too. 1-3 years.

I think thats the best of what I've scored.

Once upon a time, I wanted to buy a really, really nice AR. After customizing an order for a CMMG AR, I looked at the total cost: just a little over 1600 bucks.

So, I bought a stag parts kit, ergo suregrip, a CMMG lower, a standard M4 stock, and an upper with alot of goodies thrown onto it...and saved 420 bucks.

Moral of the story: building saves money.

I am not sure if these qualify for outrageous...but good deals to me.

June 2008 on Gunbroker: Beretta 92fs, LNIB, with six Beretta 15-round mags...got it for $356

September 2008 on Gunbroker: 1975 Ruger Security Six, blued, 4" barell, in 95% condition...got it for $250.

December 2008 on Auction Arms: probably the best deal...got a Ruger P90 LNIB with two magazines for $203. This auction was mistakenly listed on AA under "accessories"...so it got little attention. Only three bids.

Still looking each day for "good deals"...they are out there...just have to be patient.

I have never

seemed to come across a "great deal."

It seems like others are usually in the "right place at the right time" and, since only one person can occupy any given space at one time, I'm usually not that person!

I have the S/N range of the "Irish contract" models in my iPhone just in case I stumble across a No4 Mk2. :D

I did score a No4 Mk1 very early Savage production (40,000 SN) marked US Property. It's a Mk.1, not a Mk. 1* and has the round cocking knob instead of the straight one. Paid $225 for it and then found a Savage marked spike bayonet for it.

I was at a gun show about 18 months ago and saw a really ugly Sako AIII in 30-06 with a Mannlicher stock. These seem to be pretty sought after, and I like Mannlicher stocks so I strolled over to look at it, the listed price was $495. At first glance it was really ugly, cracks and peeling in the finish and what looked like lots of dings and scratches in the wood, but the blueing looked pretty decent.

While I was looking at it the seller offered that the best he could do was $400. So home it came, I probably have about 20 hours of actual work in the stock. First was stripping, and I found that the finish came off pretty easily although I was left with a stock and a forearm that were two completely different colors. Then I used an iron and a thin towel to steam as many dents as possible out of the stock, did only the barest sanding where absolutely required, stained the stock to match the darker forearm, and here are the results. Most of the scratches were actually in the finish, so it wasn't really as bad as it looked.

$400 for a Mannlicher stocked Sako that shoots well seems a screaming deal to me.

I don't usually like to kiss and tell, but here are a few that were all bought within the last two years:

Non-import IBM M1 carbine, sling/oiler, seven magazines, 100 rounds of ammo: $350

1968-vintage Colt SP1, all original: $575

LNIB S&W 422: $115

Pre-lock, snubbie S&W 317: $275

Colt Python: $550

Colt Government Model 9mm: $500

Remington 870 Wingmaster riot: $200

Arsenal SLR-95 $275 (during Fall 2008, no less)

Yes, I shop around a lot.

Bought a Winchester 52-B a few years ago in Excellent condidion (no drill holes or anything) for $50.00. Wish it would've had the box. Mfg. in 1947.

Not outrageously great, but I bought a Stag/Model 1 AR earlier this week for $550. Pretty good in this market :)

Three I can think of. About 15 years ago, bought a brand new Remington 541T .22 bolt action rifle at an inventory reduction sale for $225 ... at a Dick's Sporting Goods no less. Could sell it today for upwards of $600.

Two years ago picked up a pristine Ruger SP101 in .357 mag for $250 from a local dealer. It was on his shelf less than a couple of hours, and I just happened to stop by to see if he had anything new.

Knowing my affinity for Ruger revolvers, same dealer called me a couple of months back to see if I was interested in a 4" SP101 in .22LR that someone had just brought in. I told him to hold it for me, went in after work, and brought it home ... for $300!! They're not being made any more, are pretty darn scarce, and easily fetch $500-600.

It pays to be on good terms with your local dealer!

I will list only the items I bought in the last 24 hours. a model 75T winchester 22lr with sights for $300 it ws made in 1941 and I do not think it has been fired except maybe for testing. pawn shop find it was.
also picked up from a different place the following. 8-30 round ar15 usgi mags, 1 high cap ruger 9mm and a taurus compact 9mm mag, a new H&K 91 bipod, a steel H&K91 20 mag, arms G3 mount new and a like new nikon (older japan model) 4x12 AO scope with covers all for like 195 total.

5 new with tags 9.11 tactical rain pants in black for $5 each and a few other odds and ends.

I was setting up at a gun show and a fella across the isle has a 1903 Springfield rifle on the table ,, So I walked over and checked it out --Man it was sweet Untill I noticed the very course checkering on the butt plate [1903 national match circa 1929] I handed the guy $400.00 he told me it was a match rifle after I got it --!
at another show I was taking a walk and I see a guy carring a Mini 14 blue with the factory folding stock -I asked what he wanted -$300.00 No problem here ya go ... You walked through the show and no one grabbed it???? --Several factory mags with it also !!!

I dunno that it's outrageous, but I picked up a S&W 439 for $250 last year. I liked the way it felt and I wanted a 9mm, so I got it. It's probably my favorite gun.

Last year at a big box store I picked up a 1937 S&W 38/44 Heavy Duty for $269. They had it marked as a pre-model 10. I've had people tell me that it is a $1,200-$1,500 gun. They also had a S&W model 520 from 1980 (only three thousand made) that I picked up for $359. Folks tell me that it could bring $1,000. I believe that I will be holding on to them.

Last year I also picked up a S&W 4" bbl nickel model 19 with the box for $300. I'm not a big nickel fan but that was cheap enough not to pass up.

I need to hang with Saxon Pig some... his S&W cheapies are amazing.

Mine.... hmmmm

Browning Sweet Sixteen in good+ condition for $100 plus some elbow grease.

Mossberg 500 Field 30" Full Choke in excellent condition for $115... not a screaming deal but good.

Ruger 22/45 4" Bull Barrel for $115. Love this little plinker.

Beretta 92 Compact for $200. To bad I could not shoot it at all.

I am going to have to go through this thread 100% to make sure nobody on here that I have sold a gun to is claiming it as a great deal and I messed up.

S&W 586, about 98%, $150

Rem 870 Police Magnum (8 rd), $100

Ithaca M37 (no waterfowl etching!), $100

How about a Smith & Wesson Model 27-2 for $75.00?

Or a pair of Colt Delta Elite First Edition Stainless for $175.00/ea.?

Or a Winchester Model 12 16 ga. (mfd. in 1940) for $75.00?

.... a Colt Series Gov. Model Series 70 for $175.00?

.... a Detonics Combat Master Mk 6 for $100.00?

.... a Colt Trooper for $75.00?

.... a Marlin M57 (lever action .22mag) for $50.00?

This was my instant gun collection purchased all at one time from an attorney buddy. He had gotten them from a "chemist" client he represented on a drug mfg. charge (meth).

They guy didn't have any money and the court allowed my attorney buddy to take the guns as payment. He offered to let me buy what I wanted cheap and help him liquidate the rest.

My buddy had a VW Fox back in those days and ass-end was practically scraping the ground when he pulled up to my house. I made him wait until it was dark before we unloaded everything to take inside (what would the neighbors think?)

You should have seen the ones I missed out on when his law partner took first whack at them..... like the HK Mdl. 91 (G3) sporter with a Redfield 6-18 rangefinding scope!

I saw the spreadsheet that detailed all the guns this guy had and it was somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 in total (at least the ones they were able to round up).

Sept 09 I walked into Gander Mt and spied a Marlin 1894GS marked $179.00. I did a double take grabbed a salesperson and bought it. Couldn't pass it up.
So now I have two stainless 45-70 guide guns.

A couple of years ago my son who was 7 at the time went to a garage sale out in the country. We started to look around at various things and was looking at a coleman stove when the older gentlemen ask if there was anything I was looking for. I always answer the same thing. Old Lionel trains and older firearms. The gentleman thought for a moment and told me to hold on. He brought out a Rossi model 62A pump .22lr and a savage predator .223/20 gauge over under. I was looking over the two guns and my son kept eyeballing the mans pond. He ask if he could come back and go fishing sometime. Apparently the gentlemen was impressed with my sons asking in such a polite maner. We ended up leaving with both guns in hand for $150 dollars and permission to hunt and fish his 200 acers of land. Best part is the land is just 15 minutes from our place. Since then we have taken some pretty nice largemouth bass off his pond and 4 turkeys.

The 2nd best deal I have gotten. I loaned a co-worker $50 bucks when I was 18. He gave me a Ruger Super Redhawk to hold on to until he paid me back. That was 14 years ago and he still has my $50

Back during the '90s I purchased a Norinco sks for $77 at a gun show and also purchased 1000 rnds of ammo for $49. If anyone has a time machine that will pull a trailer, please let me know.:D

Last year I managed to find a 6" S&W 17 (used, excellent) AND a SIG P 210-6
(used, very good) .
Bought them both & paid 400 Euro for the 2 of them together.
Not bad ?
