thought this would be a interesting topic. what are you guys thoughts on the most over rated round and the most under rated round?

for me I think
the most under rated round is the 22mag
the most over rated round is the 45acp

my reason is the 22mag is a very versatile round and can be used in hand guns and rifles, relatively cheap, lower recoil and really can be used for just about any purpose.
the 45ACP is a semi auto pistol only round, expensive and not much if any more potent than the much much cheaper 9mm.

The .22 Magnum is a rifle round which, in my experience, doesn't work quite so well in revolvers and pistols. Overrated

I would rate the 9mm Parabellum as the most overrated.

Most underrated for me, is the .38 Super +P.

Over-rated: anything I didn't hit my target with.

Under-rated: anything that worked just fine when I actually hit what I was aiming at.

Look, there's just not that much difference between the capabilities of one cartridge or another similar cartridge for this to be a meaningful discussion. And bullet construction and type can make such vast changes in terminal performance as to render most comparisons between cartridges moot. Type of firearm chambering a specific round makes a huge difference as well.

Anyone who claims one cartridge is a stone-cold killer -- or that another cartridge just doesn't perform -- knows too much marketing hype and not enough about terminal ballistics. Each one delivers a certain weight bullet to a target on a specific trajectory. Any expectation of performance or failure beyond that capacity is fatuous.

These sorts of "over/under-rated" debates tend to turn into caliber wars which mostly show that folks are still largely ignorant of the fact that shot placement is King. Penetration might be queen, and everything else fades into esoterica.

But sure, I'll play. Most OVER-rated cartridge? .22 CB short. Most UNDER-rated cartridge? .959 JDJ. That should cover the spread. ;)

[EDIT: Sorry Robert, posted on top of you!]
