Tonight when I was shooting .22LR at the range, I was (as usual) pleasantly surprised by CCI Standard Velocity ammunition.
While my shooting was a bit iffy (I got several three shot, one-ragged-hole groups at 25 yards, and an annoying number of 1 shot where I aimed, second shot about 1/2" away from the first and third shot through the same hole as the first hole type groups), I was impressed by the consistency and accuracy of this particular ammo. Ignition was reliable, and I had only two FTEs (probably due to a lot of crud in the action after shooting a bunch of Federal American Eagle bulk-pack stuff for fun) out of about 200 rounds fired.
While I've been shooting CCI ammo before, I've always been concerned with "what's the cheapest", rather than "what's good". I've heard all sorts of stuff, good and bad, about a wide variety of .22LR ammo, but never heard much of anything about Standard Velocity. It's not that much more expensive than bulk-pack stuff, but of significantly greater quality (about $15-$18/500rds, rather than $9/500rds).
This got me thinking: What's the most under- or over-rated gun-related thing (be it a gun itself, ammunition, accessory, something intangible, etc.) that you can think of? Something as simple as the humble sandbag to something as glitzy as some of the thumpinblitzenboomen super-short-fat-case-ultra-mags.
You can list more than one (or none at all) for each, of course...but I'm really curious what other people's thoughts on the matter are.
