Tonight when I was shooting .22LR at the range, I was (as usual) pleasantly surprised by CCI Standard Velocity ammunition.

While my shooting was a bit iffy (I got several three shot, one-ragged-hole groups at 25 yards, and an annoying number of 1 shot where I aimed, second shot about 1/2" away from the first and third shot through the same hole as the first hole type groups), I was impressed by the consistency and accuracy of this particular ammo. Ignition was reliable, and I had only two FTEs (probably due to a lot of crud in the action after shooting a bunch of Federal American Eagle bulk-pack stuff for fun) out of about 200 rounds fired.

While I've been shooting CCI ammo before, I've always been concerned with "what's the cheapest", rather than "what's good". I've heard all sorts of stuff, good and bad, about a wide variety of .22LR ammo, but never heard much of anything about Standard Velocity. It's not that much more expensive than bulk-pack stuff, but of significantly greater quality (about $15-$18/500rds, rather than $9/500rds).

This got me thinking: What's the most under- or over-rated gun-related thing (be it a gun itself, ammunition, accessory, something intangible, etc.) that you can think of? Something as simple as the humble sandbag to something as glitzy as some of the thumpinblitzenboomen super-short-fat-case-ultra-mags.

You can list more than one (or none at all) for each, of course...but I'm really curious what other people's thoughts on the matter are.

Underrated tools: Shooting sling.

Overrated guns: M1A, AR-10, AR-15, and any rifle made by Ruger and Browning.

Underrated guns: Mossberg 500, SKS.

Most underrated .22LR ammo:Wolf Match Target. Cheap, but really accurate.

Most overrated scope: Leupold.

Most overrated semi-automatic centerfire accuracy: AR-15.

Most overrated semi-automatic rifle reliability: AK-47.

Most overrated rifle quality reputation: Springfield Armory.

Most overrated 1911: Kimber

Most underrated 1911: DW

Most overrated 1911 magazine: Chip McCormick.

Most overrated stopping power pistol caliber: .45acp.

Most underrated rimfire rifle accuracy: NEF HandiRifle.

Most underrated guns:

Hi-Point Carbine-- best $165 I ever spent
Marlin Model 60 (.22)-- far more accurate than an inexpensive, autoloading rifle has any right to be...puts the 10/22 to shame

Overrated Guns: Many magnum chamberings...Just not necessary, for the most part, but they do have their uses. I would consider some, if I was buying a new gun, but alot of standard chamberings are just as valid.

underrated ammo:

Wolf Match target-- tested in several .22s, and it shoots better than some of the real expensive Target Ammo. Other Wolf Ammo too, shot thousands of rounds of 9x19 and 7.62x39--never a problem

Sellier and Belloit--cheap, but good performance nonetheless, however cases don't last long if you reload

9mm for SD/HD-- use +P or +P+ hollowpoints, plenty good.

Mossberg 500-- As good as Remington or Winchester but cheaper

Overrated Guns: Any AR-15 that won't perform with ANY ammo, under worse case conditions.

Ruger 10/22--see above

Ruger Mini-14/30--innacurate, overpriced for what you get.

Mosin-Nagent (slightly overrated)--Yeah they're cheap, but safety and quality sucks, and you can buy a decent Mauser/Enfield/SKS/K31 for not much more money.

Honorable Mention: SKSs--cheap to buy, cheap to feed, reliable as a brick. more than capable for HD, as well as a variety of hunting. More accurate than an AK. But, I wouldn't say they are underrated/overrated, as most people conceed these points.

Please elaborate!

Well, there's one (rattle rattle) objection some people (rattle rattle rattle) have to the Mossbergs

Not sure what you're referring to. In 35 years of shooting, I've never owned anything but Mossbergs(but I've shoot the others), and they've all been nice and tight. One that I bought used, and I used to shoot trap with, fired thousands of rounds without a hitch.

UNDERRATED Marlin model 60 , Most mossbergs OVERRATED (this is personal opinion mind you so please refrain from flipping out just in case your fans of my particuler overratings) AR-15's,10mm's,WSSM

One of the most underrated shooting tools/accessories is a high quality spotting scope. Not a squint-thru-it-'til-you've-got-a-headache cheapo, but a high quality name brand spotter. While helping and improving your shooting, it makes it all the more enjoyable. And many, many of us are hunters or wildlife naturalists. So your spotter becomes a multi-tasker.

I'm not going to recommend any style or brand. That will be decided on an individual basis. My fixed power, rubber armored Leupold 20X (I believe) has been worth every cent I invested into it.

Overrated: Anything I don't own because I can't afford it, at least not right now.

Underrated: Anything I do own.
