Two things I observed the last time I shot my beloved Service Six.
1) Shooting with .357 mags, the recoil was such that the hammer hit my left thumb a couple times as the gun came back. Need to work on grip :)
2) Shooting with only left hand, (I shoot right handed) caused what seem to be little black bits of powder or something to be embedded in my thumb. Didn't hurt, and I didn't notice until I got home. Now I have to dig these little things out with a pin :) This happen to anyone else?

The hammer hitting your thumb on recoil can be figured out by either changing your grip or installing different grips that changes the position of your thumb. The getting blasted thing sounds serious. You will normally get some blast from the bbl/cylinder gap. If you are getting a lot of blast and splatter then you might have a cylinder/bbl bore alignment problem or a problem with the forcing cone. Check the forcing cone and see if it needs to be cleaned. You can have a gunsmith check the alignment with field rods. The rod is the same diameter of the bore and fits snug. You cock the unloaded revolver and slide the field rod up the bore. If the rod smoothly slides all of the way to the firing pin hole on the frame than it is good. If the aligment is bad it will "clunk" as it passes the bbl/cylinder gap and enters the cylinder. Try shooting (with gloves) six rounds with card board 10" on either side of the bbl/cylinder gap. This will tell you how much is passing out of the gap. Some powder is normal. If it is "spitting" then you are getting bullet material and the gun needs some attention.

Thanks, I'll do that.
The odd thing is that it only happens with .357 mags, and it only happens when I shoot left handed. Probably because of where my thumb ends up.

went out shooting full magnums with my 2 and 3 inch .357 revo's . tears my right pointer finger up from hitting the trigger under recoil and I get what seems like temp. carpal tunnel during shooting after say 100 rounds. I will get shooting glove soon.

If you have been shooting 38's in it for some time and suddenly changed to .357, you might be blasting out the build up crud in the chamber that comes from shooting 38's in a .357. Sometimes this build up can actually cause an over pressure condition when switching to mags.

Try cleaning the cyl chambers before anything else. You will see a build up if it is there.

Sneaky,

Yeah, that's a good one. I got that from my CCW instructor. I've been compiling all the good signatures and sending them on to my friends and relatives. They must think I'm turning into an intellectual by now.

Your's is going in there too.
