Hi guys and gals,

Question here about a holster recommendation for my XD9 full size. I'm interested in an OWB strong side holster for open carry that can conceal as well as a good IWB. (I already have a Crossbreed Supertuck, so that's my reference point for CCW.)

So here is what I'm looking for:
- easy on/off, preferably without having to remove my belt
- open to any attachment type - paddle, belt loops, etc.
- good for concealment
- retention device preferable, not mandatory
- price around $60 to $70
- any materials open for consideration - leather, kydex, etc.

Thanks a bunch for your recommendations!

I like my Comptac paddle holster for my XD9. It rides pretty close to my side and doesnt flop around any.

I think they're around $53.

You might consider our Thunderbird Defender. It actually can be used as an OWB or IWB.

It's price is a little higher than what you mention at $85 (plus shipping), but you essentially get two holsters in one package.

Not going to be easy to do this OWB for that price.
The XD is a thick-slide weapon, and OWB is very comfortable, but not terribly concealable. I would tell you that easy on/off isn't going to give toy great results. I went with an El Paso Saddlery street combat holster for my XD. It kept the weapon's profile close to the body, and was very good quality. Not easy on/off, however.
For a little more money, you could get the Kramer paddle, which is a very nice all-leather paddle, and it has a very good concealment qualities, but costs a bit more. Best of luck, and let us know what you end up with!

i use a blade tech owb holster when i carry mine, a grandfather oak iwb when i want to carry that way, but if you want the best of both worlds combined you should look into the raven concealment holsters, change the hardware and you get iwb, and owb, all in one.

Thanks for all your input

All,

Sorry for the delay - I've been away from the PC for a couple of days and just now got a chance to get back to THR.

Thank you for your input and suggestions. The good part is that you have definitely given me some very good ideas and places to look - bad part is choosing only one!

The dual purpose rigs - Thunderbird and Raven - are something I hadn't really considered, but will give them a serious look.

A question for DZL HOG - I had the Comp-Tac settable cant holster and it wasn't a very close riding rig. Do you every use your paddle for CCW? If so, what cover garments do you have to use? I'm used to just an untucked polo or button-up shirt.

To The Lone Haranguer - Skin Deep fits my initial requirements really well. Much obliged!

steveracer - El Paso Saddlery looks great! The floral carving they offer stirs my soul! 'Preciate the recommendation.

Again, thanks guys. I'll let you know what I end up with!

Ive used the paddle for CCW a few times, but mostly open carry. I can conceal it with just a untucked loose shirt but Im a very skinny guy so it still prints fairly easily b/c of the grip size. The gun doesnt dig into my side but it rides plenty close for me. Nowadays I rarely carry the XD unless hunting or target practice, since I got my PM9, which I carry IWB everyday.
