Owner of studio where Eminem recorded "Slim Shady LP" found dead
January 4, 2005, 7:59 PM

DETROIT (AP) -- The owner of the studio where hip-hop megastar Eminem recorded the multimillion-selling CD, "The Slim Shady LP," was found shot to death Tuesday inside the 700-square-foot facility, police said.

Investigators were compiling a list of suspects but had not determined a motive in the slaying of Amjed A. (A.J.) Abdallah, said Detective Lt. Norman Raymond of the Ferndale Police Department.

A business associate of Abdallah found the 36-year-old native of Jordan on the floor of Studio 8 about 11:30 a.m. EST, Raymond said. He said police recovered three bullet casings from a .357-caliber revolver and determined that Abdallah had been shot twice.

"He'd been dead a minimum of two days, likely, and the last time we have anyone talking to him verifying he was alive was Sunday night" during a telephone call, Raymond said.

"There's a possibility of robbery," Raymond said. "People who use the studio told us to look for some fairly pricey equipment and it was missing."

Abdallah lived in a two-bedroom apartment over the two-story building on Eight Mile Road, which divides Ferndale and Detroit and inspired the title of Eminem's semi-autobiographical 2002 movie, "8 Mile."

Abdallah had not reported any threats or problems at Studio 8, and interviews with several people did not indicate that Abdallah had enemies, Raymond said.

"Everybody says he was a prince of a guy," the detective said. "He did record for rappers, gangster rap and hip-hop, but we haven't found anyone who had any particular problem with him yet."

Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers III, recorded "The Slim Shady LP" at Studio 8 in 1997. The CD has sold nearly 5 million copies since it was released in 1999.

Grubb & Ellis, a Southfield-based real estate firm, listed the building Dec. 15 on the eBay online auction site, asking $215,000. David Giltner, senior vice president at Grubb & Ellis, told The Detroit News last month that Abdallah decided to sell the studio because he was spending more time in New York.

Abdallah's ex-wife and a teenage son live in northern Kentucky, Raymond said.

The homicide was the first in several years in Ferndale, a city of 22,000 in southeast Oakland County, Raymond said.

The only reason I posted this is that I thought that bolded part was wierd. What kind of idiot would shoot somebody and then empty the spent rounds from their revolver? Just seems suspicious (not that I particularly care for Eminem).

It is odd. Perhaps someone out there actually bought Desert Eagle and used it in a crime. It seems to be a popular pistol among the "blingin'" crowd. Either that or someone just picked up a few strays at the pistol range to make things more complicated.

The alternate (and quite likely) story is that the reporter screwed it up and doesnt know what the heck they are talking about.

Could it simply be that the reported got his facts messed up and they actually recovered three bullets or bullet fragments?

Could be anything. If you've ever been involved in an incident that was reported in the press, you may be shocked to read what is reported to have occured. If you then consider that most reports are no more accurate . . . you won't believe anything you read in the paper or see on TV news.

I love it when the reporter is so inarticulate that a quick game of charades is required to get to the actual facts. "Um, casing, jacket, brass, bullet, fragment.." If the killers/thieves didn't know who A.J. was I bet they are freaking out right now. It's one thing to have the law after you, they'll just cuff ya & take you to jail. Right now the law is the least of their worries. These crooks are goin' down.

"What size were the bullets?"

"They were .357 in diameter."

Of course, someone could have performed like they were trained - Shoot, clear out empties, reload, leave.

Detroit cops still carrying wheelguns?

Let's suppose that the hip hop crew who hangs with Eminem are drug-addled, violence prone punks, I know, it is a stretch but it is possible. If you want this Abdallah guy dead and you want to get away with it, you shoot him with a .38 revolver and throw down empty .357 cases that came from some other gun. The .38 lead breaks apart on impact making identification difficult and obviously they were really .357 because the brass are on the floor. Case closed!

Of course it could also be a presstitute who doesn't know his clips from his magazines!
