P-3AT Broken Barrel - Out of Box!

I just got to see two new model P32s and the fit and finish were impressively good. I suspect some abuse along the way...

No I'm dealing with the UPS a$$hats. Called Tues to get a call tag. UPS supposed to pick up yesterday. Then I get another package just now and the driver said ANOTHER driver will be by to pick it up and the driver yesterday blew me off. ***! I think this D-weed was running late and didn't want to rush back to get it on the shuttle for overnite delivery. If the second guy doesn't show a UPS manager will get an earful! :cuss::banghead::cuss:

OK, finally made it to the KT shop. First service guy said 3-4 weeks turnaround! :what: :cuss: :fire:

Then I talk to Rick, the supervisor, and explained it was DOA. He said he would take care of it personally and I should get it by next Fri.

I have a p3at, a very early one, serial number of 120. Never had a problem with good factory ammo. Even with the cheapest of ammo I've still had less malfunctions with that keltec than with a Kimber I owned.

KelTecs are a mixed bag if you get one that works, they are not a bad gun. They are a classic case of "you get what you pay for". You can't expect them to perform like a gun you pay two or three times for. I tell my customers to test fire the gun with whatever they plan to carry in it (duh). I know that KelTec has good customer service, but it's the only gun I ever owned that had a built-in expectation of failure. If you look at the various KelTec boards you will see "I did this, I did that. I sent it back to the company...yada yada.To me this is unacceptable for a gun that most buyers purchase for self-defense. many of whom can't afford a more expensive "name brand" gun. Unfortunately these are the same folks who for many reasons won't or can't spend the time or ammo to break the gun in or check for reliability.

My own KelTec experience...well lets say it is pretty dismal. My wife's P11 is the only gun that I have ever owned (well not counting a WWII FN1922 trophy) that would not reliably feed commercial FMJ out of the box.

I'm not going to slam it but wring it out completely before carrying it.

Kel-Tec is know to let a lot of lemons out. They have really good customer support though and will fix it. Generally their guns are good quality and reliable. Have faith.

As for the rust, manufacturers are doomed either way I guess. If they coat it with preservative, some idiots don't bother properly cleaning and lubing before they take it out shooting. If they don't use preservative, we complain that the gun rusted. :D

I have two keltecs and have put thousands of rounds through them. They have been great guns. I intentionally abuse my P32 and it has been flawless. I carry it whenever I can't carry. Its an addictive gun. I KNOW I'll buy a P3AT this summer and maybe even a PF-9.

I had a P-11 that worked wonderfully for me. It was purty accurate ta boot.

That being said, KT does not make there guns all nice and shiny. There is a definite break in period to get things polished up inside, or you can just do your own fluff and buff, which is what I did.

I also added a pencil eraser trigger stop and a Houge Handall-Jr.

My father wanted a small 9mm, he liked my KT, so I sold it to him and purchased a J-Frame revolver. I'm more accurate with that KT than the .38 Snubby.

ETA:
Never dealt with KTs customer service. I hope everything works out. Sounds like the supervisor cares about his companies reputation, that should work in your favor.

You have to love the internet, companies are so much more accountable to individual customers these days. If i have a problem with a gun, I can post it on the internet, and voila, thousands of people now know of the problem, holding that company a little more responsible.
