I own a Sig P6, with a number of mags. Would this gun be suitable for any of the local IPSC/USPAS competitions? I'm not that worried about being competitive, as even with a full race gun I would still be the limiting factor. I just want to get started in competitive action shooting.

Would I be better served by a full size gun that can carry at least 10 rounds? Also, 9mm is suitable for IPSC, I'd just likely have a minor power factor, right?

Power factor isn't an issue if you shoot accurately (A Zones).

The main limitation with that gun will be capacity. Even if you shot in production or limited 10, you're still at a 2 round disadvantage over other guns. You'll have to reload every 4 targets rather than every 5.

Sure it will work for IPSC. As far as being competitive goes, practice your mag changes and strive for A-Zone hits and you won't be giving up much.

I have shot IPSC on and off since 1995, and I have seen old geezers(technical term) with single stack 1911s and 7 round magazines beat punk kids with hi-cap Paras and STIs on numerous occasions...great entertainment :).

Just my .02,

this would be a great gun to get started with...most likely scenario is that you'll compete in USPSA production and IDPA SSP..against 10rnd guns..

no big deal..you are starting out..so just shoot to your ability..learn the games, have fun..and when the bug bites..then see what you want to do..

for USPSA..plan on having 6 or so mags..which will cover you for IDPA..for USPSA..have mag pouches for 4 or 5 of them..for IDPA you only need to carry two..

have a good belt and good holster..make sure you have water, snacks and sunscreen..and head on out..
