I have shot approximately 800 rounds through my p7. I finally found a gas piston scraper, but I do not have the gas piston brush still.

First, how do I remove the carbon from the gas piston itself (not the slot). The thing is coal black. I have a stainless steel brush, phosphor bronze brush, and nylon brush along with Hoppes #9. Would any of these products combined suffice? Normally I wouldn't be so hesitative, but this gun is my carry gun, so I need it to perform flawlessly.

Second, what caliber and material of brush should I use to clean the gas piston slot since I can't seem to find the one that H&K shipped the gun with.

Third, should any products like CLP be used to lube the gas piston slot?

Thank you for your time and advice.

I've only used the scraper in mine. Seems to do a really nice job of it. I also clean my M8 soon after shooting while the soot is fresh & kinda warm :D You may wanna check out hkpro.com or parkcitiestactical.com and the Cult of the P7. There are ALOT of P7 fans out there ;)

I don't shoot my P7M13 much, its more a collectable for me ($100+ for extra mags!!!) But I cleaned the gas piston with auto parts carb cleaner and an old toothbrush. Keep this stuff away from any plastic or painted surface, its much more aggressive than brake parts cleaner.

Hydrocarbon + hot gas = carbon (or explosion if you are unlucky), keep the piston and cylinder clean and dry.

No lube in the gas piston slot. Carbon on the gas piston itself does not seem to affect reliability.

Just brush it off with a wire brush. The gas cylinder should be scraped with the tool .That's all I've ever done in many thousands of rounds. Any solvent or lube will only burn up and cause more carbon and other gunk.

You don't need to get the crap off between the piston flanges. As long as the edges of the flanges are clean, you are good.

If you do want to clean it up more, I've had good success with CLP and dental instruments. Just make sure not to put any burs or gouges in the piston flanges!

NO BRUSHING

According to HK you are NOT supposed to use a Wire brush. I soak the piston in a bowl of SLIP 2000 for 10 minutes then wipe with a cloth. It's the only stuff I've found to really clean well without heavy brushing. Use only a soft nylon brush if any at all.

I clean cylinder/piston with MPro7 and lube with Elmer's Slide-All, a dry Teflon lubricant. No carbon build up or googus of any kind using the HK cylinder cleaning tool between cleanings, including a test period of over 1500 rounds. HK has included a bronze cylinder brush with the P7s for years. A .270 brush works just fine, too.

Do a search over at the Cult of the P7 and you'll find tons of posts on the subject
