I'll be going to an indoor range this weekend to shoot and hopefully finally make a decision on my next purchase. I've been researching full size 9mm's for the past few months and thanks to the info here on THR I've narrowed it down to the P99 and XD.

My main question here is the difference in the 3 different triggers available on the pistols: 1)P99 AS...2)P99 QA...3)XD DAO.

I'd like to know what you like and dislike about each option and your opinion as to which is best. Any other opinions on these pistols are welcome as well.

I'll also throw in that the gun will serve as a HD/range pistol. Also, I've held and love the ergos of both so its really a toss up in that area. Thanks in advance.

P99 AS - Traditional Double Action (DA/SA)
DA Pull = approx 11 pounds
SA Pull = approx 5 pounds
When the slide is racked and a round is chambered, the trigger stays fully forward like in DA. This is the AS trigger mode, with a long light pull before it enters SA so the pistol can be carried safely in SA if needed.
Pros: Traditional double action with second strike capability if a FTF occurs.
Cons: The AS trigger mode is an aquired taste and needs alittle getting use to.

P99 QA - Single Action Precocked
SA Pull = approx 8 pounds
This is much like a Glock trigger pull with a heavier pull.
Pros: Consistant pull from first to last shot.
Cons: Quick, but long trigger reset. No second shot capability.

Springfield XD - Single Action Precocked
SA Pull = 5.5 to 7.7 pounds
This is much like a Glock trigger.
Pros: Consistant pull from first to last shot. Short Reset
Cons: No second shot capability.

I have owned each of these pistols, and ended up selling the QA and XD. I own four P99 AS and carry daily for work and personally when I am off. The AS trigger takes alittle time to get use to, but it is not a big obstical. With either trigger system, the P99 is very accurate, reliable, and of high quality.

At the beginning of the year, my whole protection team decided to make the P99 our standard pistol. The company bought us 6 P99AS, 6 P99cAS, 4 P99QA, and 4 P99cQA. Ten members with a full size and compact for each.

In my opinion the P99 is a better pistol then the XD. I like the XD, I just like the P99 much much more. Just my two coppers.

jenglish thank you for that very informative post...I do have a question for though, you mentioned that the XD is much like a GLOCK trigger pull, but how does the weight of the XD trigger pull compare to GLOCK? I've just heard that the GLOCK is so light that many consider it a possible safety issue

I do not believe the XD trigger to be like a Glock. The Glock has a heavier pull and the break results in a decent jerk of the gun (while dry firing). The XD is a bit lighter than the Glock and breaks smoother. I prefer the trigger of the XD to that of the Glock.

As for the P99, I have no idea. I know a guy that carries one, so I'm sure it's a good one. It's up to you, which do you shoot better?

well I'll find out on Sunday which one I shoot better...I don't want to overanalyze this thing too much but I do want to have some different points of view to think about when I do go to shoot

that's interesting that you consider the XD lighter than the GLOCK

"you consider the XD lighter than the GLOCK"
Looks like he's saying the XD trigger is lighter than the Glock trigger.

I'd go with the P99 AS - it's essentially a DA/SA gun, and the darn thing fits my hand like it grew there. I like DA/SA.

The Glock trigger pull is 5.5 pounds (3.5 in the target models) and the XD pull can be from 5.5 to 7.7 pounds. The only thing that makes the actually pull "feel" different is length of travel. I do not have those numbers (comparing the Glock to the XD). The Glock has always "felt" lighter then the XD, in my hands.

I would have to agree with Geronimo45, and reccumend the P99. Comparing the P99 to the XD is like comparing apples and oranges. Your best bet is to rent and compare side by side to see which you prefer. Let me know what you find out Sunday.

I will say that the P99 is my frontrunner at this point, but shooting them side by side will be the tell all....hey I would be thrilled though if I shot the XD and had to have it because I'd save a $100 (unless I got the bi-tone)....ahh choices, we'll see
