I did a search and read all the threads, and Ive held both guns before. It seems that most people think the P2000 is a better gun overall, not by much but a little nicer. My question is, is it worth the extra ~200 or so it costs. P99 is about 525 new while the P200 is around 700 from what Ive seen. Any opinions are appreciated. Both would be in .40 cal, if that helps.

Well, I considered the P2000 for about 5 seconds and then realized that there is no way it is worth the $200 more than a P99.

What does the P2000 have that the P99 doesn't? Especially for $200. That $200 is just for the HK name.

Go with the P99 and spend the $200 on ammo, range time, and any accessories you so desire.

2 advantages come to mind in my situation. I do own a P99 and USP Compacts, getting a P2000 eventually 1, I already have a bunch of USP Compact mags that will fit the P2000 which is worth the 200 right there also, no new mag carriers. The other is a standard rail for a light which can be useful...

As always, what will fit your hand better. For lefties I would say either the P990 or the P2000, righty P99, P990, or P2000 would be a very nice pistol.

Thanks for all the replies, what should I look for when buying a P99? Im going to buy it new, but I want to make sure its all German made and has a late build date. Anything else I should look out for?

Do you want a P99 with DA/SA or a P990/P99QA with DAO, the reason I ask is it comes in both flavors. That may also play into your decision.

Yea, I checked out the FAQ, I was just wondering what year guns I should be looking for from a dealer 03 on or 04 on? Any other things, BTW 10 = 2 in binary, bet you dont find a lot of people who get that joke.

I just re-discovered this thread.
I have a P99, a P99QA, and a new P2000 LEM.
The H&K is very nice, it's a better trigger than the P99QA.
But, in the final wash, the std. P99 is what I'll still carry.
My wife has switched from the P99QA to the H&K P2000 though.
So it's a personal thing.
YMMV

I have a P99QA and a P2000 in 9mm. I have not done extensive side-by-side firing with the guns. Based on what I have done, I think that the muzzle flip and the recoil are less with the P2000. I also prefer the grip angle on the P2000.

Whether you choose the P99, P99QA, or P2000, be sure to dry fire the guns because each has a different trigger pull. According to a post that I saw on HKPro, there is also a version of the P2000 available the does not use HK's LEM trigger; instead, it is a traditional DA/SA with a decocker.

Is the P2000 worth $200 more than the P99? Probably not. Both are accurate and reliable. Buy the one that you like better.

True, but the DA/SA decocker on the P2000 is pretty weird IMO. It's a tiny little flat button right beside the hammer. Kinda awkward to operate if you're used to a SIG or USP-type manual of arms.

I didn't get to shoot it yet but I had the opportunity to fondle it at the IWA in Nuremberg last week. It balanced and pointed really well and didn't feel top-heavy like the USP. The trigger of the DAO variant was pretty nice, too.

If I make it into my home state's police service this year I get to carry it :)

Trooper
