I flew back home again this year for the first three days of rifle season in PA, and it was a banner year, to say the least.

Out of the four guys with whom I camp on my family's farm, all of us scored bucks. Three of them were out of the exact same SkyBox 20' ladder stand, and all within 30 minutes of legal shooting. Mine, a 2.5 year old 8 point on opening day, then my brothers, a broken antler 1X4, then our friends, a 1.5 year old 8 point. Including my early morning buck on the second day last year, that makes 4 bucks in four days of hunting from the exact same stand.

Out of the seven guys who hunt that farm, 6 filled their buck tags--but one was during bow season.

My buck was the biggest for the second year in a row, which was pure luck, of course.

Once again, the Hornady Leverevolution performed superbly from my 30-30. I hit my buck in the shoulder at about 40-50 yards, and due to how he was standing, I took out a chunk of his heart and some lung. He ran right towards my tree, and I shot him again, even though he was already dead, but just didn't know it yet.

For the gear:

I was expecting a bitter cold hunting season, like I remembered from when I was a boy, in the mid to late 1980s, mainly because the last two years were warmer than average. So I bought a MadBomber rabbit fur blaze orange hat from Cabelas. Excellent hat, and it has replaced my "lucky" Elmer Fudd that I wore for decades. You cannot hear a thing when the ear flaps are down, but it's warm as can be that way, and still pretty warm with the flaps up.

I also bought some boot blankets from Cabelas, where you put your hunting boots inside little sleeping bag type things. They'll be a regular item for me from now on.

Every year the guys I hunt with buy each other some sort of gift, and this year I got them, and myself, Glenn's deer drag handle. Great product. You cannot imagine how easy it makes dragging a deer. I was actually able to run uphill pulling my brother's buck.

All in all it was another great hunt in unit 2F.

Cool! Can I come next year? I haven't gotten a deer yet this year. Only saw two 3pt bucks and a few small does in 3 days of hunting so far.

Congrats to all, nice deer! I don't hunt in PA, but visit frequently and subscribe to the PA Outdoor News. It is amazing to read each month of all the discord between hunters, other hunters, game commission and politicians. Many seem to believe that in parts of the state the longstanding hertiage of PA deer hunting is slipping away, and the herd is disappearing. I know this would vary somewhat by region, but what do you think?

We saw lots of does, and obviously some bucks. Our group, although it has extremely strong ties to PA in general and to that land in particular, is 5/7 non-resident, so most of us do not qualify for doe tags. We have been seeing a lot more bear, coyote, and turkey.

All in all, the woods we hunt are in prime condition.

Congratulations! Where in PA do you hunt? We had a rough year in central PA again. Out of the two camps I'm associated with (about 18 hunters), my dad got the only buck. He's the only one who saw one to shoot at too. They disappeared, and we can't figure out why. Especially since we didn't slaughter the doe when they changed the regulations. Only thing we can figure is that the neighboring camps did.

EDIT: Just realized you said you hunt in 2F. The northern part of the state seems to be doing better with the deer herd than we are farther south. hmm. Well, congratulations again!

For what it's worth, neighboring hunters and residents who stopped by our camp indicated that most of the camps around ours were not having much success.

It will be interesting to see the overall harvets numbers, although I'm sure many hunters do not report their kills, since there is, as far as I know, no incentive--like a free license or some other perk that many states offer--to do so.

It stinks to go out and not see a single deer all day, which is what happened to me both days last year and opening day this year. That being said, we're seeing bucks bigger than we've ever seen. So that's nice. There was an overpopulation problem, but unfortunately they took the solution to that problem too far, in my opinion.

It's gonna make that next buck even sweeter though. I'm 25 now and haven't even taken a shot at a whitetail with my rifle since I was 16 or 17, so it'll be a great opportunity when I do finally get that shot. I just better not miss!

But congrats on the successful season. I'm glad you guys are seeing deer, because I suspect we're losing a lot of out of state hunters with the decreased deer population.
