South PA, and a bit West of center!
Do they exist??? Sheesh - well round here forget it!!!

Two years ago on my travels, thru WV, KY, TN, AK, TX, NM, CO, KS, IL, IN, OH ..... I saw a heap of em!! Well - here and there.

Is there something about PA? Are there any? Just interested to know.

Chris , we have one up here in town , "Garys Steals and Deals" , problem is Gary has a bit of trouble in his past so he'll never be an FFL. Some DeWalt tools and a bunch of the video game stuff , plus whatever people pawn/sell him.

Heck Ray - I was thinking zilch! No FFL tho - there's a pity!

I guess it was the FFL aspect I was bemoaning - seems like nothing around compared with other states. Maybe it's a ''SW PA thing''!!

Oh well - I reckon we have other plusses so - no real biggie. :)

You're up late again - so what's new! LOL :D

I was born and raised in the Reading, PA area. Come to think of it, I can honestly say I don't think I ever saw one around that area.

Now.....here in the Phoenix area, I think there must be one on ever corner. having said that, I can say I never saw a deal worth my time.

Not much help but I figured I would throw an answer in here for you anyway. :D

Nehemiah,

I'm guessing you've never been in a a beat up '87 Celebrity, running on fumes, lost in Beltzhoover? Almost made me pray to be in a beat up '87 Celebrity, running on fumes, lost in Clairton.

virtually all the pawn shops in PA got caught in a usury law /possetion of stolen goods
enforcement crunch.

the usury law enforcment came from trying to kill the "rent to own" businesses.

the possetion of stolen goods stuff ... arrgh.
they would prosecute and attempt to jail not only the counter help but all the owners of the business.

all under the guise of "fighting crime" and "consumer protection"

there may be a few pawn shops in PA but FEW is the operative word.

I spent 6 years working in Harrisburg in the late 50's-early 60's and there were a few pawn shops in an alley several blocks away from where I worked. Don't know if they're still there but the shop windows were always filled with firearms.

There's one on main street in Indiana, no firearms though. Not really a big loss because there's a better shop just around the block from it.

Im in Lancaster, Pa.

Theres are a few here but they pretty much sell junk, NO GUNS.

There is a place called PAWN PLUS which is run by police from other cites so you dont reconize them when they are in police uniform.

NO guns there either.

Thx guys - helps explain it. Never was a pawn shop fan per se - just the appeal of maybe (very maybe) finding a snip deal on a gun now and again. Keep hearing other folks talking about it - feeling sorta ''disadvantaged'' now and again! :p

I do believe there is one in Wilkinsburg, on Penn Ave, across from Braverman's Arms.

I also believe there is one closer to the homewood/wilkinsburg border, with a banner that says "See Sonny for Money! : Serving the neighborhood for 30 years. We buy gold! Silver!"

I laugh, I stop at the red light, I go home...

I think there's one in Butler, "Trash and Treasure" or something like that. IIRC, it's a really cheap, cruddy, corrugated metal building. Never been in there.

I know there are a few in Philadelphia. I can't think of a single one around me. Pawn shops are very rare in PA. I would guess that rms/pa is right about why. It seems to agree with something I remember reading a while back; although I never really looked into why myself.

steelbanger, yep thats where they were.

the redevelopment authority tore down those buldings for a mall/office bulding. no the pawn shops were not invited to set up in the mall.

that was also about the time that downtown harrisburg had died.(69-85)

its come back a lot since our mayor for life stevie reed took over. ( think of mayor daly I but better at hiding the graft)

Plenty of pawn shops here in Philly, however I've never seen a firearm in any of them.
