I requested a qute from Pac Nor on rebarrelling a
Chilean '95 Mauser in military contour. They came back
and said I would have to have the receiver tested for
a Rockwell hardness of 20-21.

Are they serious or is that their way of saying "That's a
dumb idea, Go away!"?

Can anyone suggest another supplier for a new barrel in
original length and contour?

No, some of the Mausers are soft, so they want to make sure that they don't make a grenade when they re-barrel it.

I have several Pac Nor barrels and they are top notch.

I've heard good things about they're barrels, it's they're
customer service that concerns me. They probably have or
should have the $40K equipment to determine HRC in tenths.
Why should a customer have to determine this beforehand?

I told them it was a Chilean '95 in 7.62N with a 28"+ barrel
which means either a Lowe or DVM German receiver. The
Spanish are the soft ones, or if improperly hardened become
dangerously brittle. Condition of the lugs not HRC is the concern
with the German '95s. Gray cast iron has an HRC of 20 but I
wouldn't want a receiver made of it. I was asking about a new
7X57 barrel (7X57 has a SAAMI 45000 CUP max) which the 95s
were designed to be.

Therefore, are they flakes or are they jerking me around because
they fell I am?

I have loaded the German 95 Chilean in 7mm up to the limit.
Kicks like a mule.
Good rifle.

I wish I had my own RC tester, at $900, I will not be getting one soon.

My one pac nor barrel is a lightweight old M70 .270 that fouls and warps.
Lots of other guys have good results with pac nor.
Not me.

I do much better with Lothar Walther, Shilen Stainless, and Douglass XX.

In fairness to Pac Nor, after I sent them an Email outlining
my position, they replied later offering to test the receiver
themselves at no additional charge. They said the receiver
should be OK and provided very reasonable estimates for
the barrel installed or shipped to me short chambered.

Receiver tested, 28.5" mil contour barrel installed-$455
Same barrel shipped short chambered-$305
