Would you really want your Kel-tec .32 if this happens? (I have a Kel-tec, not a slam on the gun...but, can you really carry enough gun?)

ELBERT COUNTY - A pack of roaming pit bulls neighbors say have been aggressive in the past mauled a woman to death Sunday morning and injured two men, the Elbert County Sheriff's Office said.

Jennifer Brooke, 40, died Sunday after being airlifted to Swedish Medical Center.

Brooke left her home about 7 a.m. to take care of her horses in a barn near her home in a rural community east of Parker.

About 10 a.m., her friend Bjorn Osmunsen, 24, became concerned that she hadn't returned from doing her chores.

Around the same time, Osmunsen and another person were chased inside by three dogs. They noticed blood on the dogs' fur, Rattlesnake Fire District chief Dale Goetz said.

Osmunsen called 911 and reported Brooke missing, then went to look for her.

When he arrived at the barn, he was mauled by the dogs, as well, sheriff's officials said. He was later treated and released from Swedish.

A little before 11 a.m., Lynn Baker stepped out of his house about 500 yards away. The three dogs attacked him, gnashing his arms.

"It was awful," Baker said. "It was terrible."

Baker had walked to his pickup and was about to head for the store when he heard growling and suddenly saw the dogs snapping at him.

"The next thing I know, I'm being attacked by three pit bulls," he said. "One was leaping for my throat as one was dragging me down by my hand."

With the dogs hanging onto him, he tried to make it to the bed of his truck.

"I did make it to the back of the truck, or I wouldn't be here now," Baker said. "I kicked the big pit bull and yanked my hand down. It was scary. I thought I was dying."

The dogs attempted to jump in the bed of the truck and nearly made it when Baker started yelling, screaming so loudly that neighbors a quarter-mile away heard the shouts. He hollered for his mother to call 911 and for his 16-year-old son, Cody, to grab a gun.

Cody shot at the dogs with a 12-gauge shotgun, blinding one, knocking one down and disorienting the third.

The distraction was enough for Baker to jump down, grab his truck keys from the driveway and climb into the cab of the pickup. He drove it close enough to the house to scurry inside, he said.

"I told my son, 'It's my turn.' So, I grabbed the gun," Baker said.

Baker said he shot the largest pit bull twice with birdshot.

"I needed something bigger," he said. "When I shot him the first time he just come a running toward me, so I shot him again."

Baker then ran back inside the house, and the pit bull waited on the front porch.

"It's unreal," he said. "It's like those dogs have no soul. ... They were just looking for people."

All of the dogs were eventually killed by Elbert County sheriff's deputies, he said.

Baker was taken to Sky Ridge Medical Center in Lone Tree, where he was treated and released.

Dawn Woods said she could hear the shouting and gunfire from her house. She said the dogs had caused problems in the neighborhood before.

"They got out and attacked a jogger," she said.

"Another time, the dogs chased a woman into her home and persistently clawed the glass at her deck door until officers arrived," Woods said.

"You just don't expect things like that to happen out here," said Teri Koren, who lives in the area. "People let dogs run wild out here. "

There is a $50 fine for pet owners who let their dogs roam, Elbert County Sheriff Bill Frangis said.

Goetz, who responded to the call, described Sunday's attack as "gruesome" and said eight men have received counseling over the incident.

"I've been doing this 37 years," Goetz said. "I've never had anything like that."

Firefighters hosed Baker's home and blood-stained pickup Sunday night, fearing the pit bulls may have had rabies. The dogs' bodies will be examined to determine whether they had the disease.

Frangis said it was undecided whether charges would be filed against the dog owners.

Underwood did not release the name of the dogs' owner, but neighbors said the dogs come from a fenced yard in the 42000 block of Ricki Drive, less than a mile from Brooke's barn. There are other dogs on the property, Woods said.

A large sign on the gate warns "Beware of Dogs."

"They came to the wrong house when they came up here," Baker said.

Baker grieved for Brooke on Sunday night, calling her a friend.

The barn where she was mauled is about 500 yards from his home, and they often helped each other with their horses.

"I'm going to be fine compared to what my poor neighbor went through," Baker said. "Compared to what I went through, what she went through must have been horrible."

Yet the anti's say carrying guns and standard capacity 15 round mags are a bad idea.
Pack of dogs kill Colorado woman, attack two others

KIOWA, Colo. (AP) - A pack of dogs neighbors had feared in the past fatally mauled a woman and attacked three other people over the weekend before they were gunned down by a teenager and sheriff's deputies.

Authorities said Jennifer Brooke, 40, was killed early Sunday after she went to a barn in a rural area southeast of Denver to care for her horses. A friend worried about her, Bjorn Osmunsen, 24, was attacked after he went to look for her.

The dogs, all pit bulls, then moved on to a nearby home, where they attacked Lynn Baker as he stepped outside.

''It was awful,'' Baker said. ''One was leaping for my throat as one was dragging me down by my hand.''

He said he jumped into the bed of his pickup truck and screamed for family members inside to call authorities, and for his 16-year-old son, Cody, to grab a gun.

Cody Baker shot at the dogs with a 12-gauge shotgun, blinding one, knocking one down and disorienting the third. The distraction was enough for Baker to jump down, grab his truck keys from the ground and climb into the cab of the pickup.

He drove it close enough to the house to scurry inside, he said.

''I figure I'd do anything before I'd let my dad get hurt anymore or die,'' said Cody Baker, who was attacked by was not injured.

Authorities arrived and killed the dogs. They then turned to the victims.

''It's a gruesome thing, it's kind of hard to deal with,'' Elbert County Undersheriff James Underwood said. ''Even the fire department and the rescue personnel were having a hard time dealing with some of it.'' Eight firemen were being counseled.

A nearby resident, Dawn Woods, said she could hear the gunfire from her home, and she knew the dogs in the past had attacked a jogger and chased another woman into her home.

Authorities say the dog owners had been contacted but there had been no decision on charges.

What a tragic story... You just never know when a dog will go "Cujo"; it does sound like rabies could well be involved.

And if I see large dogs charging my front porch, I won't be loading up with anything smaller than #4 Turkey loads...probably 3"Mag #4 Buckshot, and my 1911-A1 for backup.

next time try something more substantial than bridshot... otherwise good show of responsible use. too bad the lady died.

i think the dogs owners should be held liable and tried for at least involuntary manslaughter or possibly mayhem

good thing it wasnt a spas 12...

This reminds me of the Diane Whipple/Presa Canario case. Disturbing. I hope the irresponsible SOB who let those dogs run loose gets the book thrown at him.

Let that be a lesson to everyone. Load up with buckshot. Birdshot's for birds. Nothing else.

The average pit bull bred to fight weighs 38 - 45 lbs.. A buddy of mine has 2 pit bulls bred for size, they weigh 80 lbs.. Breeders have bred these things to 100+ lbs. I go to this guy's place a couple times a week. Occasionaly these dogs (who have excellent blood lines and cost a lot of dough) get into it over a bone or something. It's pretty ugly. Fur and blood flies. This guy keeps a good size 150,000 volt zapper handy for such instances. Last time it took 2 hits from the zapper for the male to release the bitch.

My buddy is a engineer and is no dummy. (except when it comes to these curs). He's also extemely well read on the subject of pit bulls. He tells me 2 regular size pits are more than a match for him at 6'2" 350 lbs..

Time has come regulate this breed and it's like.

Have to disagree with you

I worked as a vet tech for a time, and very rarely had problems with pit bulls. (No, my name has nothing to do with it :p) In fact, my understanding is that they bite less on average then many other breeds. The breed gets a very bad rap.

The worst animal I ever dealt with was a Saint Bernard. That dog almost killed me.

It is the training and care for the animal that makes a difference.

Years ago, (15) I used to raise PitBulls for a little extra money. Not alot but enough of them to generate approx. 3000 $ a year. After many attacks on people, lawsuits, hospital bills etc. I decided that it just wasn't worth the trouble. An estimated loss of about 20 thousand after it was all over. :( I have since came to the conclusion that these dogs are totally worthless except for killing each other and the occasional person. I now raise a breed known for it's utter devotion to humans. Labrador Retrievers.

There should be a bounty put on them, $1000 for the head, no questions asked. Pit Bulls and wolf-hybrids have absolutely no business being anywhere around people. The owners of the dogs in this story should be should be sued for everything they own and THEN be thrown in prison for negligent homicide.

And yes, I used to own one… then I grew up.

...Pit Bulls and wolf-hybrids have absolutely no business being anywhere around people....
-The problem with singling out breeds is that people who have other breeds who are aggressive use that as an excuse for leniency when their dogs act vicious. And for what it's worth, a vet tech I dated said that poodles and Dalmations were the worst two dogs to handle she saw.
....
If a dog ever gets loose and engages in a vicious attack against a person, it should simply be destroyed immediately--no excuses, no delays, and the owner should be charged with the crime. People who are willing to try to own animals with such tempers shoud keep them contained, or lose them and face the same charges as if they'd have committed the same crime themselves--every time.

My mom is a pediatric intensivist, and EVERY SINGLE kid that comes into her unit with his/her scalp ripped completely off has been the result of an agressive rottweiler. Every kid.

Not that I know much about dogs, but those rottweilers are what I'd worry about.

I have a St. Bernard, sweetest dog I have ever had the pleasure to own! Well actually its my mom's sis, but she lives with us.

Drools like a fiend, but wouldn't hurt a fly!

I'm not bum-rapping any breed. But a felon can't own a gun, and yet they can buy what is escentially an equally deadly weapon. A dog. I agree the breed may not be at fault so much as the owner. I've got 2 small mutts cause I've got a small place/yard so I think it would be cruel to have a larger dog. Plus small dogs make small crap, a very important thing to consider.

All I'm saying is there's a jillion dogs in this country. Some need to registered to owners somehow. Around here bangers fight dogs and turn the losers loose, to go wild. I see 11 yr. old ganster wannabe's mistreat pitbull puppies "jus to get he attitude rite". Id like to kill em.

It's genuinely scary. We had the lady killed out here in San Francisco by a large large fighting dogs (WAY bigger than pit bulls) attacked her in a hallway and basically ate her a piece at a time while the owner tried unsuccessfully to stop them.

I've been attacked five times while walking my dogs, injured a couple of times, had one dog killed. But, since we are in kali, carrying a weapon is a felony and firing it would be another felony. So, I keep walking and waiting for the next time.

Around here, we don't have any problems with stray or aggressive dogs.

Stray or aggressive dogs just get shot, period, end of problem.

That's the way it should be everywhere.

The problem is not so much the dogs (or anything else) but all the laws and regulations preventing people in most areas from protecting themselves and/or taking care of the problem themselves.

It would be interesting to see how an anti-gun person would evaluate this thread. Probably, he or she would call it hypocrisy to have these aggressive breeds (and/or their owners) registered or outlawed but not 'assualt' rifles/handguns.

The biggest difference between the two, of course, is that one is inanimate and predictable by itself and the other is not.

It's a dang good thing his son knew at least a little about using a shotgun.

I have no use for Pit Bulls any more than cobras. To me, the ultimate dog is a German Shepherd.

Frangis said it was undecided whether charges would be filed against the dog owners.
WHAT???

I smell gross culpability here!:cuss:

Pitt's ... Rotties ..... even Dobermans at times ...... sorry but, I have ZERO trust for any of these. Seen far too many cases of ''nice Fido'' goin beserk and rippin into people.

On reflection I think carry is every bit is potentially necessary at times for dealing with 4 legged ''BG's'' .... as much as the 2 legged variety.

<Budding major rant ... nipped in the bud .. to save bandwidth and boredom to others.>

Stray or aggressive dogs just get shot, period, end of problem.

thats how we do it. i make allowances for the nieghbors, if i recognize somebodys pet, or something thats obviously not just another mangy stray, i'll let it be. if it sticks around or causes trouble, its toast.

The folks who owned those dogs should be locked up. If you're going to have animals with violent tendencies, then you are responsible for keeping them under control. Sort of like firing a gun into the air: you're responsible for where the bullet lands and whatever damage it inflicts.

I hope they throw the book at 'em, and really hard.

And I hope there's a wrongful death civil suit right on the heels of the criminal charges.

I had a dog grooming shop for over 22 years. I had just about every breed you can think of up on my table at one time or another. The most likely to bite were 1. Lhasa Aphso (especially males around 2 y.o.) 2. American Cocker Spaniels 3. Chows..............just thought I'd throw in my .02

PAOLO721 .. welcome to THR!:)

I respect your comment ... born thru experience. Yeah ... I know those lil fellas can sure nip easy - and also have heard some ''Chow'' tales in past too.

I think thing is .. with particularly Rotties and Pitts .. they are bred to a point where they have phenomenal biting power .. look at the masseter muscles on a Pitt. This means that they can do extreme damage and are hard to get off once bite-locked.

Overall, I guess I have come across many breeds who have created trouble at times .... and in truth find it hard to trust that many at all .... but for shere power I still leave the Pitts and Rotties top of my list for potential very serious damage infliction on people.

Bottom line anyways ... an owner HAS to bear liability for his dog/dogs .. they are ''loaded guns'' sometimes.
