Well, it's finally together! I got the Ares Signature billet lower months ago, but between finances and PSA putting out the .308 kits with an eye dropper, it took until last week to finally get that ordered. 8 days from checkout to delivery; pretty good, considering PSA's reputation on shipping, although I've honestly never had a problem.

Anyway, the upper looks great. I don't know if PSA is doing their own barrels or having them made, but it is marked ".308 WIN 1/10 SS PALMETTO". It is, of course, the Midwest Industries SSK 15" hand guard. I honestly would have preferred the non-key mod version, but again, at the rate that these kits are being offered and how quickly they get snatched up, I didn't wanna wait for that one.

Anyway, here she is!

A friend of mine ordered the same kit, but they goofed his, included an AR-15 parts kit :banghead: Mine was right, though. But that doesn't mean we were without issues.......

The Ares billet lowers are nice, and the price reasonable. But they are not exactly DPMS standard. Yes, the upper mates just fine, but the take-down pins are not a perfect match. Pin diameter is right, but the heads are too big to fit the recesses on the Ares lower, and those recesses are not deep enough for the pins. So I had to reduce the head diameters to .380", then bore the holes with an end mill deep enough for the detents to engage, which was about 0.060" on the rear and ~0.110" on the front. I also had to round the right hand vertical edge of the bolt catch a little, and since I actually want to be able to remove the thing, I use a partially smooth shank screw in the threaded hole of the lower, rather than the roll pin included in the PSA kit.

Other issue is the grip. Would not have been a problem with a standard A2, and an MOE or similar probably would have worked fine, too, but the trigger guard on this thing is .910" wide, so I hade to substantially modify the UTG "sniper" grip to fit. And no, I wasn't being cheap; I actually really like the fit of this grip in my hand better than any other AR grip I've tried, which is just about all of them.

So we finally got those things sorted out, and I attached the upper at the front take down pin. Then tried to close it........:scrutiny: The charging handle was coming into contact with the receiver extension housing well before the pin holes aligned. So off it came, and back out to the shop, where I removed 0.030" from the housing on the Ares lower. Finally, it was all able to come together. Everything was really tight at first, but after working the CH a few times, operation smoothed out. Chambered a round just to make sure it would, and I think we are go for launch.

I'm happy with it. The Ares lower is a nice looking piece, and you just can't beat the PSA kit at $719. Having said that, anyone considering that combination should be aware of the fitment issues. Of course, if you're buying an Ares lower, you ostensibly have the ability to do some light machining, since they are only sold as 80% lowers.

And yes, that's a cheapie optic. It's an NC star mk III 6x32, which I got for a really good price and just kept around. Actually not a bad little optic, one of the better ones they make. But it will be replaced, most likely with an Aimpoint PRO. Just gotta wait a little bit, let my finances recover. In addition to this one, in the last month I built my 22" bull barrel 5.56 AR, picked up a .300 BLK upper, purchased about $600 worth of ammo and reloading components, and other expenditures.

For those curious, the price breakdown as she sits:

Ares anodized billet signature lower: $170 shipped
PSA .308 SSK15 rifle kit: $737 shipped
UTG grip: $22 shipped
Magpul AFG2: $38 locally w/tax
Magpul ACS: $95 locally w/tax
NC Star Mk III scope: $60 locally

Total: $1,122

Not bad at all, considering my last .308 AR, an actual Armalite AR-10A2 carbine, was just shy of $1,500 after tax back in 2005.

Hopefully she shoots as great as she looks.

Hopefully!

If this stainless tube is made the same way as the two stainless freedom uppers I have, I expect it'll be pretty accurate. Both of those are just barely over MOA with varmint ammo, could probably be sub-MOA with match loads (haven't tried yet)

One thing I will say about the MI handguard; it's a nice looking unit, but I'm not a fan of the rail section profile. The AFG2 is spaced significantly further off the handguard than it is on my UTG SS 15" non-key mod. I'm probably going to mill a good 0.125" off the rail section to suck it up tighter. It looks like crap with that mac truck sized gap between the AFG and HG where the rail section is absent, and I'm not real keen on the cost and added weight of using a longer section.

MachIV, have you shot it yet, if so, what will it do on paper?

Not yet. Got it together last week, but this past weekend was 48 hours of blowing snow and well below freezing temperatures.

I also don't have any match grade loads right now, so will only be able to report on ball ammo and some 165 gr. ballistic tip loads until I get around to loading up some 168 gr. Matchkings.

Please let us know how it shoots. I really want a match grade barrel 20-22". My PSA lower is sitting in the safe with a stripped upper. Its sitting next to the PRS stock and a Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP Riflescope with EBR-1 Reticle (MRAD). I have everything I need but the handguards and barrel.

I have been contemplating one of these just for the interim to get it into a full rifle.

The charging handle was coming into contact with the receiver extension housing well before the pin holes aligned

I finished building an AR15 from PSA this weekend and had the same problem, no big deal, just some light sanding to fix it.

My 9mm AR CMMG had it so bad that the charging handle would not go back. I couldn't fix it so I returned the upper thinking it was the problem, received a replacement and no better. Started sanding it down some and it got better, kept sanding and it is fixed.

Hopefully mother nature plays nice this coming weekend so I can report back on this critter. I did stop in Big R to grab some 168 gr Matchkings, but they were out. However, I scored a box of 155 gr A-Max, just got done seating all 100 into commercial brass, 50 atop 47.0 GRS. Reloader 15, the other 50 stoked with 47.0 GRS. IMR4320. I seated them as long as would fit the mag at 2.265". We'll see how they do!

I ordered the rifle kit this am, 18 barrel. Also ordered the psa blem lower for 99.00. I have a rra 308 and dpms. Will sell the dpms if I like the psa. I never cared for dpms compared to the rra.

I am also very interested in how she shoots. I just ordered a blem lower and I am thinking I will pick up one of their uppers with the lower kit. I wish they had a 20" offering.

Had a little spare time today, so I ditched the birdcage, replaced it with a piece I whittled out of some 1" mild steel round stock

Unfortunately, the assembler at PSA had pretty well flattened the crush washer, so it sticks out a little. New one on order, as I didn't feel like turning ssomethingiIcan buy for $2.

I wish they had a 20" offering.

18" is a good compromise; eeks out a little more velocity, but still handles like a largish carbine.

Got to play a little today. Didn't feel like trekking through several inches of snow and sitting in 16* weather to test for accuracy, but ran a couple mags to ensure function. Not a single hiccup, recoil was noticeably softer than my FAL, and I think even a tad less than the Armalite carbine I had. To be fair, though, the Armalite didn't have a brake or the ACS stock.

Hopefully weather is nicer next weekend so I can give an accuracy report, but overall I'm very pleased with the rifle.

Good to hear. I ordered their lower and plan on using their upper with lower kit. So I am hopeful I will have a decent rifle when I am done.
