I saw a used Para LTC and S&W 1911 SC today. They are going for approximately the same price, and show a similar amount of wear.
This would be my first 1911.
Is one better than another? Which company has better track record/quality?
1. Smith & Wesson USA Company with excellent service
2. 1911Sc will be lighter than the LTC with steel frame (although there is a LTC with alloy frame).
3. 1911Sc finish holds up better according to owners (search the web for Para LTC finish problems).
4. Did I mention S&W has the best customer service and it has a LIFETIME warranty not attached to original owner? ( I Don't believe Para offers that).
I like my Para. Nice tight fit, very accurate, feeds hp's reliably. The finish is now a rugged duracoat, er Para-kote.
When I went looking for a commander-sized 1911 to replace my colt 1991a1, I settled on the Para after my local gun shop had a Para field day. Mine's an alloy framed version, and I don't have to worry about mags eating the frame due to the ramped barrel.
The service representative for Para is George Wedge [email protected] and the service center for the United States is in Sevierville, Tn. Para will stand behind their product 100%.
This is coming from a die-hard smith and wesson fan. Just ask me about my M&P 9c.
With both being quality firearms, I would say that the choice would be up
to the individual prespective owner. With that said, recently when faced
with the same type choices I opted for a 5" (all stainless steel) Smith &
Wesson; and I am a happy camper. This gun is awesome, and would rival
my new Les Baer TRS 1911 in terms of accuracy any day of the week. I
am particulary impressed with the Novak (low mount) three dot sights; as
these old eyes can acquire a precise sight picture very quickly; where
the same eyes have a difficult time with the Baer's factory Trijicon night
sights in bright sun shine~!
I've shot both, and it's a coin toss. My Para's and my S&W's have been the only 1911's I've owned that ran out of the box with no tweaking or break in period.
If you're looking for a good carry gun, the Scandium is quite a bit lighter.
