Para Ordnance P12-45 Cure

Earlier this month I had jamming issues with my P12-45. Now, it shoots like a beauty. Here are some money saving helps that you could do:

1. Disasseble the back end of the slide: Firing Pin Stop, Firing Pin, Firing Pin Spring, Extractor Block and Spring, and Extactor. And Thoroughly clean (brushing) all components and internals.

Excessive powder/excessive lubricant build-up can push the Extractor away from its place. If the exctractor seems to be damaged, Brownell's sell them for 17.99.

2. Magazine: Seems like most of the issues that P12-45 is experiencing is caused by faulty and defective clips. The factory mag springs do not have enought tension to it. Rack and lock your slide and insert a full mag. If your top-ammo does not line-up or at least close to lining-up with the chamber then you have one out of these 2 issues (or both): weak mag springs and/or mag-lips are too tight.

• Springs: Replace with Wolff Springs and Follower $8.00
• Mag-Lips: Open it up a little using long nosed pliers (be gentle)

Keep opening up the lip until it comes close to lining-up. You will know and feel if the ammo doesn't line-up, it'll snag. And if your using HPs, it'll sit, resting on the bottom of the feed ramp, causing slide to lock back.

3. Barrel Feed Ramp: Lightly polish it.

I took it to my gunsmith after doing the following steps and he said that its in excellent condition. No more jams, no more disappointment.

ps: My gunsmith told me not to bet my life on HPs, especially on a .45...he suggested to stay using ball tips. But if you really have to use HPs, put one in the chamber and keep the rest ball tips.

I did many of the same things to my P-10 to improve function. However, it also required some tuning of the 2-piece recoil spring. I'd bet my life on it now (and I do since it's my carry piece).

Tinker... did you replace your 2-piece to a single? that would be my next project... i'm replacing the entire recoil assembly (single spring, ss rod (wolff) and plug)...

Useful thread. My P12 has been all but safe-bound due to unreliability - pity cos love feel, trigger and accuracy.

Just today sent off for uprated mag springs and once I have those will also do a detailed disassembly, inspect and clean. Hoping this will improve matters. We'll see.

Thanks for the post. Maybe I'm motivated now to pull mine out of the safe and give it another whirl.

I really like the feel of mine as well. The accuracy was surprisingly good. Hopefully I can get it running right.

...glad to be of help... i know it was a little fraustrating in the begining because i love my P12... it looks good, good size, good feel, good shot, but its just wasnt reliable... UNTIL NOW!

...i'm probably looking at upgrading other cosmetics soon, but for now, i am very pleased with its performance...

I kept the 2-piece recoil spring and clipped 1/2 coil off the big one. Before, it wouldn't eject reliably, now it works great. I'm not sure a one-piece system will work with the short P-10, and I'm not willing to spend the money to try. However, because the barrel is longer on the P-12, it may work for you.

THis is odd, my 12-45 is my daily carry. I have had one ONE fte in about 5400 rounds ....clean it and and carry it and it works

My gunsmith told me not to bet my life on HPs, especially on a .45...he suggested to stay using ball tips. But if you really have to use HPs, put one in the chamber and keep the rest ball tips.

Hmmm.... my 1911's will feed any bullet profile, they only choke when I try to feed empties, even then they sometimes feed! A properly tuned 1911 pattern pistol will feed hollowpoints. There are some bullet ogives that are more difficult, basically conical shaped bullets are the hardest to feed. Most hollowpoint ammo in 45 ACP these days feature a rounded ogive and feed just fine.

I think the biggest downfall of the Para Ord high cap guns is the magazine. During my IPSC/USPSA days I saw a high number of failures to feed, almost all were from dirty or damaged magazines or weak magazine springs.

My P12-45...

...was reliable, right out of the box. It's my CCW piece, carried every day...and feeds Hydrashoks, Golden Sabre, and even Black Talons ( don't launch too many of them puppys now days though...)

para just need to really concentrate on improving there mags... again, majority (including mine) of the issues surrounding the P Series (hi-caps) are defective and poorly made magazines.
