My dads birthday is coming up and he has an old colt python that he loves. He has had the gun way longer than he has had me and he has put quite a few thousand rounds through it. Now it has a problem indexing the cylinder because the ratchet is so worn down from use.I want to get the gun fixed for his birth day.If I do get a hold of the new parts can I just pop them in or does the timing need to be adjusted by a gunsmith?

Yikes, these babies are like fine watches.
DO NOT just take it apart and help O'le dad out.
The best thing to do would be to send it back to Colt.
They made it, they can fix it.

There are very few pistolsmiths out there qualified to work on a Python...it is certainly not a DIY project...send it back to the factory to have it done correctly.

While it is there, you might even consider having it refinished...depending on the wear it has...I understand it is very reasonable

When my Python went back to the factory for a refinish, they did that free.....Might think about calling Colt at their 800 number and ask about how much it might cost to send it to them and have them do it. NEVER mess with a Python internals unless your other job is making movements for Rolex.

I would look and see how long the waiting list is for Grant Cunningham or Cylinder & Slide and expecting that they are quite long...I would opt for Colt.

As they mentioned...this is a job for an expert.

Also consider that the Colt factory will only replace those parts that need to be replaced. For example you may find that the problem isn't the ratchet, but the hand or a sprung crane. The basic platform, going back to 1908, was designed to be brought back into correct timing by adjustment rather then parts replacement, and on any number of occasions I have corrected the timing of a Colt with nothing but my trusty hammer. :uhoh: :what:

Well O.K., it does have a plastic head...
