Does anyone know if passive retention shoulder holsters exist, and how well they work? First-hand experience would be great.

I have a custom rig and unbuttoning it is awkward.

There are Kydex makers who don't use straps, and Alessi makes a rig where the snap is within the trigger guard and releases on the draw.

Although I make my own holsters in both Kydex and leather, I (personally) wouldn't make a passive shoulder holster; there's too much opportunity for your arm or body to 'pull' hard enough on the gun to release it, and the consequences of failed retention in a shoulder rig are fairly serious. In fact, the last shoulder holster I made for my G43 has a thumb break and extra molding, so the gun is fully retained without the snap; belt and suspenders, as it were.

I used to have a Bianchi Scorpio inverted clam-shell shoulder rig for my 2.5 inch Model 19 S&W.. NO LONGER OFFERED The gun sorta-snapped out of the holster when jerking down. I think Nevada Gun Leather makes or made a copy of it. It was a very good way to carry that revolver.

Yup, the old Berns-Martin. Good holster, wish I still had one. I preferred inserting the revolver before donning it.
