Jim Zumbo's blog:
As I write this, I'm hunting coyotes in southeastern Wyoming with Eddie Stevenson, PR Manager for Remington Arms, Greg Dennison, who is senior research engineer for Remington, and several writers. We're testing Remington's brand new .17 cal Spitfire bullet on coyotes.

I must be living in a vacuum. The guides on our hunt tell me that the use of AR and AK rifles have a rapidly growing following among hunters, especially prairie dog hunters. I had no clue. Only once in my life have I ever seen anyone using one of these firearms.

I call them "assault" rifles, which may upset some people. Excuse me, maybe I'm a traditionalist, but I see no place for these weapons among our hunting fraternity. I'll go so far as to call them "terrorist" rifles. They tell me that some companies are producing assault rifles that are "tackdrivers."

Sorry, folks, in my humble opinion, these things have no place in hunting. We don't need to be lumped into the group of people who terrorize the world with them, which is an obvious concern. I've always been comfortable with the statement that hunters don't use assault rifles. We've always been proud of our "sporting firearms."

This really has me concerned. As hunters, we don't need the image of walking around the woods carrying one of these weapons. To most of the public, an assault rifle is a terrifying thing. Let's divorce ourselves from them. I say game departments should ban them from the praries and woods.

Remington to Sever Sponsorship Ties with Jim Zumbo

Madison, North Carolina – As a result of comments made by Mr. Jim Zumbo in recent postings on his blog site, Remington Arms Company, Inc., has severed all sponsorship ties with Mr. Zumbo effective immediately. While Mr. Zumbo is entitled to his opinions and has the constitutional right to freely express those opinions, these comments are solely his, and do not reflect the views of Remington.

“Remington has spent tens of millions of dollars defending our Second Amendment rights to privately own and possess firearms and we will continue to vigorously fight to protect these rights,” commented Tommy Millner, Remington’s CEO and President. “As hunters and shooters of all interest levels, we should strive to utilize this unfortunate occurrence to unite as a whole in support of our Second Amendment rights.”

We regret having to terminate our long-standing relationship with Mr. Zumbo, who is a well-respected writer and life-long hunter.

this makes me want to go hug and give a fresh oiling to my 700

Almost brings a tear to my eye

Course, then the .17 factor comes in and I just want to gag at the thought of another .17 cal round

I have stayed out of this one so far , but the time has come for me to ask questions . First off i belive the damage Mr Zumbo did on his blog cannot be un done , and i totaly support Remmington and Out door life on thier decisions . I do have to ask Us as a " firearms community " if Zumbo serves us better summairly hauled to the gallows ( so to speak ) or if it better serves us to set back and watch what happens for a bit . He may well come arround and support all firearms under the 2nd. Remember folks he is a " hunting writer " not a gun writer ( righter) , and most likely does not own many , nor has he eaver looked beyond his egorcentric views before. IMHO tho he can never " fix " his blog post, he can learn and communicate the spirit of the 2nd ammendment. Hell if he does good enough RRA , magpul , larue , and some others may sponser him in the future . He is now wrong headed , and screwed up , but are we better off educating that class or ostricising them ?

Fixed that for them.

+1 for Remington. My next big purchase will be from them for sure now. And I'll write a letter explaining that their action is why I chose them. I'd encourage other people to do the same.

And I'm very happy to see that most people realize 'free speech' does not mean 'no consequences'. Good on you all!

I bought a Remington 870 just last week before this hit. I'm glad I didnt make the wrong choice as far as company policy goes. Zumbo excercised his 1st Amendment right (as he has the right to do) and now has to deal with the consequences now.

Looks like Zumbo changed his tun a bit

His retraction:
I was wrong, BIG TIME

Someone once said that to err is human. I just erred, and made without question, the biggest blunder in my 42 years of writing hunting articles.

Yada, yada, yada.......

Believe it or not, I'm your best friend if you're a hunter or shooter, though it might not seem that way. I simply screwed up. And, to show that I'm sincere about this, I just talked to Ted Nugent, who everyone knows, and is a Board member of the NRA. Ted is extremely active with charities concerning our wounded military, and though he's known as a bowhunter, Ted has no problem with AR 15's and similar firearms. My sincerity stems from the fact that Ted and I are planning a hunt using AR 15's. I intend to learn all I can about them, and again, I'm sorry for inserting my foot in my mouth."

The question is: Is this a sincere change of heart, or an attempt to keep the sponsors he still has?

Josh

Far to easy

he stuck foot further into mouth because at this point it looks a hell of alot like he is just trying to save face, is saying what wants to be heard, and doesn't want to loose nice sponser dolalrs.

I just have to say I really, really love the internet...

Just ten years ago this idiot would have gone totally unchallenged. He would have gone writing more hit pieces, he would have been cheering the AWB (oops, he probably did). Now ten short years later he is eating crow and going AR-15 hunting with Ted Nugent (the much beloved poster child for the wild side of our movement), and his sponsors are running away from him like he's contacted ebola.

Next thing you know Ruger is going to beef up their Mini's and offer reliable 20 and 30 round magazines for them......

I wonder if I write a blog bashjing the AR15 if I could get a hunting trip with the Nuge?

You know it might almost be worth it to be honest

Good on 'em. I was just about to buy a Remington in .260 (if I can find one). Now I'll buy two-maybe the other one in 30-06.

Lacoochee hit the nail on the head with this one. The response was rapid and overwhelming. Behold the power of the internet.

I just got this reply from Tommy (pretty impressed that the CEO is taking the time to answer emails) :)

Tommy

I appreciate Remington's fast and decisive response to the Jim Zumbo affair. I have always admired Remington products (I have had an 1100 since 1987...I used it to shoot trap and skeet on the University of Illinois Shooting team and to hunt ever since.)

I now plan to accelerate my plans to purchase of a 105CTi (saw one at the NRA Convention last year and loved it). I was wavering between it an a Benelli but you sealed my fate.

In case your board questions your decision, I just wanted you to know that it can have POSITIVE financial implications.

It strikes me that Remington really meant it with this one. If it had been a measure of corporate CYA, it would've taken them much longer to publicly renounce ties...based on the comments and threads I gather that Remington was already severing contact before Zumbo even knew what had happened. That speaks to me of honest belief and intent, and I can deeply respect that.

Yup!

I think it's the 870 for me, too. That way, I can back up the wife when she goes to check out the "bump in the night" with her 1100.

(I love my wife!)

Look at your rights and freedoms as what would be required to survive and be free as if there were no government. Governments come and go, but your rights live on. If you wish to survive government, you must protect with jealous resolve all the powers that come with your rights - especially with the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. Without the power of those arms, you will perish with that government - or at its hand. B.E. Wood

PS: I bought my Bushmaster BAR 10 to do dual duty. Yes, to put meat on the table and to put down the meat that would invade my abode. It's all about meat, you see...

On The Flip Side,

I wonder what Zumbo would think of me taking my Marlin 1895G into battle...

Woody

How many times must people get bit in the (insert appropriate anatomical region) before they figure out that infringing upon rights sets the stage for the detrimental acts those rights are there to deter? B.E.Wood

Ouch! There's more...

Hunting With Jim Zumbo
Statement from Outdoor Life

Due to the controversy surrounding Jim Zumbo’s recent postings, Outdoor Life has decided to discontinue the “Hunting With Zumbo” blog for the time being. Outdoor Life has always been, and will always be, a steadfast supporter of our Second Amendment rights, which do not make distinctions based on the looks of the firearms we choose to own, shoot and take hunting. Please direct any comments you have to [email protected].

Fallout like this makes ol' Jim wish he had wet his finger and checked the wind direction! :uhoh:
