Pat on the back to Remington

This is the response Cabela's is handing out to those who are writing them in regards to their sponsorhsip of Jim Zumbo:

Thanks for your comments. While Cabela’s believes everyone has the right to express their own opinions, we strongly disagree with Jim Zumbo’s February 16 posting on his Hunting with Jim Zumbo blog on Outdoor Life’s Web site.

Throughout our 46-year history, Cabela’s has firmly supported all aspects of shooting sports. We strongly support the Second Amendment of the Constitution of the United States and the right of every U.S. citizen to purchase, own and enjoy any legal firearm of their choosing.

While we fully support Mr. Zumbo’s First Amendment right of free speech, we believe his opinions on this matter are counter to those shared by Cabela’s and many of our customers. Cabela’s Legal Department is currently reviewing contractual obligations and commitments regarding our sponsorship of the Jim Zumbo Outdoors television show.

To me Zumbo sounded truly contrite, but Remington did precisely the correct thing in firing him. Zumbo is entitled to his opinion and Remington is entitled to employ who they wish.

I am really impressed with Remington's response. RARELY, and I mean rarely does one witness this forceful and unambiguous a reaction in today's PC world. Kudos to Remington.

That's great. Glad to see Remington is not S&W - selling out gun owners. Good for them!

Funny thing is that the AR-15 is just a rifle. It's no more dangerous than putting a 30 round magazine in a Remington 7400 and going deer hunting. I believe all states have magazine limits for hunting. And I believe that in the interests of fair sportsmanship, those limits are appropriate FOR HUNTING.

However, a properly configured AR is an accurate hunting platform for some types of game. With a low capacity magazine it's no different than any other rifle. This guy's comments just proved what an ignorant idiot he is. Judging hunters by how their weapon "looks" as they walk through the woods - gimme a break.

hmmm...

...Like I said before, if they make a brand new, Remington ar-10/15 available to us mere mortals, I'd lead the charge to the gun store...
It should be a George Washington model, in honor of Presidents' Weekend to commemorate the carnage created by the Zumbo declaration...;)

Impressive.

No meely-mouth, politician like issue skirting, no hiding, ducking or running just plain spoken words, promptly addressing the issue.

No equivocation. Very nice to see.

Hunting With Jim Zumbo
Statement from Outdoor Life

Due to the controversy surrounding Jim Zumbo’s recent postings, Outdoor Life has decided to discontinue the “Hunting With Zumbo” blog for the time being. ...

I have a couple of issues with their statement (which I've written them about). If you read the statement carefully, the blog has been suspended not because they think he is wrong but because they don't like the "controversy". Think about that.

Also notice they say "... discontinue the Hunting With Zumbo blog FOR THE TIME BEING". That sounds like a little slap on the wrist to me.

Then they go on to say how they support the Second Amendment. I have problems with what I see as two attitudes. Contrast that to what Hi Mountian Seasonings (used to also be a sponsor) posted on the front page of their web site http://www.himtnjerky.com/

Kudos to Remington;) . I think I'll go out and buy myself an 870 with my tax return LOL.

My letter to OL:
I am pleased to read that you decided to take action against the remarks Jim made about AR15 style rifles. I was just about to call and cancel my subscription in light of those remarks; I was shocked and offended by them. I own more than one military style rifle and have a problem with being lumped together with terrorists. Furthermore, I do not believe Jims' apology to be sincere. Rather, I believe it was only said as damage control once he realized the amount of people he offended and the potential fallout of his comments. I do believe you should have followed Remingtons' lead and severed all ties from Mr. Zumbo and I hope that ultimately you will. I will refrain (temporarily) from canceling my subscription to OL. Thank you for your time. HPD subscription # ------

The question is: Is this a sincere change of heart, or an attempt to keep the sponsors he still has?

damage control. he meant what he said.

"hello, Jim Zumbo here, I was wondering if you might recommend a good way to end my career?"

follow the money... much as I respect Remington, they only terminated Zumbo because not having terminated Zumbo would have cost them $$$$$$.

I'm glad they fired Zumbo...but I'm not giving them any Kudos. They would have ignored the article had not people risen up and threatened their bottom line. It's no small irony that they will not sell an AR15 to us, yet they fired Zumbo for saying we shouldn't have them. He was THEIR mouthpiece. I don't plan on buying anything from them.

I applaud Remington to being the first up to can Zumbo.

The other former sponsors that have also dumped him are cool with me, too.

I like how this has gone.

Give some thought to the "why" of all this. I don't think there's ever before been a case where the Internet and blogs and websites have demonstrated the empowerment of "just folks" as has this Zumbo deal.

Lots of politicians are going to have to rethink their views and attitudes.

We not only spread Zumbo-jive across the whole world, we vote.

I feel we should reward Remington and Cabelas

with our hard earned money, they did the right thing.
we should do the same, my next gun purchase will be the venerable 870.
Cabelas is opening in Reno soon, I will buy it there.

I was wrong, BIG TIME

Someone once said that to err is human. I just erred, and made without question, the biggest blunder in my 42 years of writing hunting articles.

Yada, yada, yada.......

Believe it or not, I'm your best friend if you're a hunter or shooter, though it might not seem that way. I simply screwed up. And, to show that I'm sincere about this, I just talked to Ted Nugent, who everyone knows, and is a Board member of the NRA. Ted is extremely active with charities concerning our wounded military, and though he's known as a bowhunter, Ted has no problem with AR 15's and similar firearms. My sincerity stems from the fact that Ted and I are planning a hunt using AR 15's. I intend to learn all I can about them, and again, I'm sorry for inserting my foot in my mouth."

Someone once told me, "always be sincere even if you don't mean it." :barf:

I too am pleased with Remington's response. I have always loved Remington rifles and would dearly hated to have had to find others for my sons and I to hunt/shoot with. I would like to see them offer their AR variant to the civilian market also. I don't own one currently, but after this mess, I am putting it on the top of my new purchases list.

+1 art. i almost look forward to a scrap with legislators over this proposed AWB legislation. the fallout from the combined response of internet groups like this is going to be IMMENSE.

Remington is definitely going to get some business from me over this one. I was between a Mossberg and a Remington, looks like an 870 is in my future.

After Reading this, I plan to order a Barrett M468 & 2000 rnds of REM 6.8SPC from the Boise Cabelas.
(All 3 have earned our support.)

yep, glad i went with the 1100 for my 20ga instead of the O/U i was considering.

i don't see how zumbo could swing that, what a dope. my professor for property was a clay shooter, but ripped on hunters and defensive-minded shooters regularly, as if he was somehow worried about being judged by the hippie youth so much of his time is wasted on. i'd still love to make it out to his club and see what his shooting buddies would think of those opinions - probably have to buy his own thrower. "united we stand" indeed.

in any case, his apology is ridiculous. how he could think anyone would believe he could 180 so quickly - from "terrorist guns" to "i want to learn all about them and hunt with them" - just shows what fools he takes his readers for. i know few politicians so spineless in their convictions. no attempt to rationalize or justify or explain, which might show that he at least thought about it and has now reasoned his way to the light - just a complete 180. his home in the sporting world just got eminent domain'd. the shooting community has thankfully freed up a spot in the gun rags and safaris that'll be better filled by someone with a head on their shoulders.

Fixed that for them.

I am not patting anyone on the back just yet, not even Remington.

Take note of the strike-through in 'Card's post, and comment of "Fixed that for them".

Remington's response seems a bit gutless to me.

Internet is Real Time.
Many that have hurt Freedom by supporting Tyranny outright, or being "Silently Non-Commited" - have not been in power with Internet being Real Time.

I am playing hardball.
Paybacks are hell as they say. For too long Tyranny has been able to use signal attenuation , propagation delay, mis-configured routing protocols and ...
Freedom now has a strong and sound Network up and running.

By golly I want the cards face up on the table now! I want to know MY enemy and smell the bad breath when the cards are tossed down.

If you are against me - say it.
If you are gutless - say it.
If you support me - look me dead in the eye when you tell me so.

Enough pussy-footing around. For too long folks have gotten by with slaps-on-the-wrist, and being gutless.

Bottom line, It is MY choice what I choose to believe, and I have been taught by too many folks, from firearm related companies, to politicians to other folks in the firearm community - to not believe a darn thing they "say" or "do".

Folks are going to have to earn my trust, and time will tell.
I am keeping watch.

Zumbo never had my respect.
Winchester lost my respect.
Remington - sorry, you have been losing more and more of my respect over the years.

Same can be said for other firearm related companies, and for darn sure Politics and elected officials.

Solid!

Put the cards face up on the table, I want to know those folks I am seated with.
Folks that earn my respect, are welcome at MY table anytime.

I just picked up some Remington ammo, (.30-40 Krag and some Slugger 12ga) from the local gun store today, and I will likely buy some UMC max packs of .45ACP and .223 in the next few days. Got some EBRs to buy in the next year or so, but after that, I think it might be time for a Wingmaster or 798 bolt.

another Zumbo apology:

The last few days have been an educational experience, to say the least. My ill-conceived inflammatory blog, as all of you now know, set off a firestorm that, I’m told, has never before been equaled. I’m not proud of that.
Let me say this at the outset. My words here are from the heart, and all mine. No one can censor me, and I answer to no one but myself. And I have no one to blame but myself. Outdoor Life, a magazine that I worked for full-time as Hunting Editor for almost 30 years, fired me yesterday. My TV show was cancelled yesterday. Many of my sponsors have issued statements on their website to sever all relationships. This may cause many of you to do backflips and dance in the streets, but, of course, I’m not laughing, nor am I looking for sympathy. I don’t want a pity party.

They say hindsight is golden. Looking back, I can’t believe I said the words “ban” and “terrorist” in the context that I did. I don’t know what I was thinking when I wrote that. I can explain this as sheer ignorance and an irresponsible use of words. What I’ve learned over the last few days has enlightened and amazed me. As a guy who hunts 200 days a year, does seminars on hunting, wrote for six hunting magazines, had a hunting TV show, and wrote 20 books on hunting, how could I have been so ignorant and out of touch with reality in the world of hunting and shooting?

But I was. I really can’t explain it, maybe because I just summarily dismissed the firearms in question in my mind when I saw them in magazines and catalogs. I saw one “black” firearm in a hunting camp in all my 50 years of hunting, and I shot one last year off a boat when fishing in Alaska. To tell the truth, it was fun and I enjoyed it immensely, but I never considered one for use in hunting. I have to tell you that I have had a revelation. I’m learning that many of my pals own AR-15’s and similar firearms and indeed use them for hunting. I was totally unaware that they were being used for legitimate hunting purposes. That is the absolute truth.

My biggest regret is not the financial impact of all this. I’m almost 67 and retirement is an option. The dreadful impact here is that I inadvertently struck a spear into the hearts of the people I love most…America’s gun owners. And, even though this huge cadre of dedicated people have succeeded in stripping me of my career, I hold no grudges. I will continue to stand as firm on pro hunting as I’ve ever done. But what’s different now is that I’ll do all I can to educate others who are, or were, as ignorant as I was about “black” rifles and the controversy that surrounds them. My promise to you is that I’ll learn all I can about these firearms, and by the time this week is out, I’ll order one. The NUGE has invited me to hunt with him using AR-15’s, and I’m eager to go, and learn. I’ll do all I can to spread the word.

I understand that many of you will not accept this apology, believing that the damage has been done and there’s no way to repair it. You have that right. But let me say this. I mentioned this above, and I’ll repeat it. I’m willing to seize this opportunity to educate hunters and shooters who shared my ignorance. If you’re willing to allow me to do that, we can indeed, in my mind, form a stronger bond within our ranks. Maybe in a roundabout way we can bring something good out of this.

Jim Zumbo
