Hi all,

I was just looking for good cleaning videos. I came across Larry Potterfield's shotgun barrel cleaning video and noticed he uses a patch over a mop. Is anyone familiar with this process? Also, for a 12 gauge shotgun, should you still use a 12 gauge mop if you are putting a patch over it? That would get snug, wouldnt it? The link is below.

Yes, I have done it for probably 50 years.
It helps keep the mop cleaner.

However, I don't often use a mop at all, except to apply oil to a clean bore.
I use a bronze bore brush or Tornado brush for cleaning plastic wad & lead residue out.

No, it doesn't get tight, because by thier nature, mops are not very tight to start with.
They are basically just a fluff ball.

I use a patch over a brush after I have used the brush by itself. Spray your barrel with the cleaner of your choice-from brake cleaner to WD-40 to CLP, run a brush down it in a cordless drill, then do the final cleaning with a brush and patch or similar. Lots of variations to the above that will all give you a good clean barrel

Don't forget to clean your choke tube threads, both on the tube and inside the barrel
